We were cruising along the Gironde river in France, when we noticed Fort Medoc on our map. We took a detour on a rather bad minor road to it, but it was definitely worth the effort!
It is one of those very nicely maintained sites, which are not that packed with tourists (though it was late afternoon when we were there). The fortress has a lovely setting along Gironde, surrounded by a moat and lovely woodland. There are some preserved buildings to wander around and a small exhibition in one of them. There are some small paths around the woods, which not many tourists take, but it is definitely worth it... because we saw some huge rodents, which turned out to be Eurasian Beavers!
