We stayed in a private room for two with ensuite facilities for 2 nights. My friend and I usually stay in budget, good value hotels (maybe 50 to 65 euros in french provinces, 90 euros in Paris), but found it impossible to book a budget hotel in Strasbourg at our budget with 2 weeks notice, so we decided to stay at CIARUS since the reviews were favourable.
The private room was very hostel-like: meaning institutional and basic. My friend remarked that she felt like she was in a refrigerator-I think she was quite depressed by the room. The room was small but quite clean (except for this ugly streak in the toilet). The small beds were quite comfortable. The most inconvenient thing about the room was the shower-it didn't have a tap but one of those knob things which you have to keep pressing so the water will keep running. I understand this is in the interests of water conservation but it meant we couldn't have a decent shower and I didn't wash my hair at all during my stay bcos it was so inconvenient to do so. The shower also had no door and only a shower curtain.
Other than the room, the counter staff were quite helpful, and we could store our luggage in the lockers for free with no time limit. Breakfast (included in room price) was continental, comprising of yoghurt, bread, tea, coffee, etc. The corridors are cold and nondescript and there are many school groups in the hostel. The hostel is about 20 minutes walk from the Cathedral and the town centre.
I think this hostel is quite OK, but not comparable with the nicer, cooler and warmer hostels I've stayed in, like the Circus in Berlin. If you have a better budget or can book earlier in advance, it would be better to stay somewhere else.
