I was lucky enough to get a reservation at S'kaechele tonight. I had read some raving reviews about this restaurant while in Paris, and en route to Strasbourg, I decided to make a reservation by email. My reservation was accepted and confirmed within days.
I dined at S'kaechele tonight. I can honestly say that there have only been TWO restaurants that I have dined in in France thus far that have made me truly feel "happy". One in Paris, and S'kaechele is the other.
When you walk in to say you have a reservation for 1, and the host remembers your booking by email from 3 weeks ago, it's a good sign. Her little restaurant (seats approximately 24 inside) filled up quickly after my arrival. Those who were unfortunate enough to not have a reservation were turned away...much to my dismay as I was feeling sad for them..that they would not experience the food and hospitality of S'kaechele tonight!
My host, the wife of a husband/wife combo, was dressed in jeans and a long sleeved top with an apron. It created a very homely feel and a warmth that you will not find in many other methodical and indifferent restaurants in France. She speaks French, German and English. She was very helpful and quick to offer any assistance I may have needed with the menu - a pleasant change.
The food was great quality and hearty. Her service was warm, genuine and always with a smile. As I watched her serve my meals to me with a genuine bonne appetit, and whizz around efficiently about the other customers, I couldn't help but smile. She was so fantastic at serving current customers, greeting new customers, and she did not falter one bit. She was attentive, noticing that the table next to me had finished their side of mustard for their choucroute, she promptly asked if they would like some more. Even though she was busy, she stayed on top of everything while serving every dish and pouring every glass of wine with a smile.
For good food, and a warm...almost loving...experience, this is the place to go to. There are not many places where you go to dine in your life where you just feel such a sense of happiness to be there. This isn't the fine dining, 3 star, I'm happy to be here sort of happy. That's just superficial happy because you should be at a 3 star restaurant.
This is true happiness because for some reason, you feel like this is what it might have been like if you were a young French kid and your awesome French mother was serving you some good for the soul food at home. Cue the scene from Ratatouille.
If you are in Strasbourg, visit this wonderful place!
