“Spectacular local food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

This restaurant executes its concept to perfection. Fabulous organic/sustainable/biodynamic food and wines locally sourced, cooked properly. Maybe this concept isn't for everyone, but Blue Hill and Jean Geoge's ABC Kitchen are trying it in New York to rave reviews and this place blows them out of the water. Over the past 10 days in France I have driven all over the country eating at the best Trip Advisor recommends. Most of those meals were fantastic, but this is best.

This place is so good that I believe it deserves a full run down.

1. My starter was a "chicken wing salad" two chicken wings that tasted like well chicken and then a fabulous assortment of local produce. Maybe you want your chicken wings doused in hot sauce, or deep fried beyond recognition, paired with a bit of water logged celery, but if you want fresh and flavorful this is for you.

2. For the main I had the duck. Which you know tasted like duck. It might not have been as tender or fatty as you are used to, but that is probably because this duck was actually allowed to fly and walk around, rather than bred so it can't fly and then held in a cage its entire life. Once again the duck was paired with a fabulous assortment of local produce. Particular highlights included red and yellow peppers, figs, and some edible flowers.

3. For "dessert" I went with the cheese course which was 4 cheeses all from the surrounding 20KMs! Of course it was great.

For wine I had a Pinot Gris which was biodynamically produced by friends of his. Bright and flavorful and then a pinot noir that was also very good. All wines were reasonably priced and available in all sizes (bottle/carafe/glass).

On top of that throw in a lovely outdoor patio, reasonable prices, and a gracious (English speaking) host/owner who is proud of his food and happy to tell you about it.

Once again a great meal. Maybe everyone isn't into this approach to food, especially in this country and this region in particular, but that doesn't make l'Arpege any less special or delicious.

“Lovely restaurant with great deal, at least one vegan set meal everyday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

Found this on TripAdvisor, attracted by their EUR14.50 3 course lunch deal, called in advance to confirm they could do gluten-free meals. The owner spoke good English and was really nice and patient to translate and explain us the menu. Was a bit skeptical about the quality for being such low cost in a touristic area, turned out they were delicious, they even had home-made gluten free cake! Great lunch place : )

“Wonderful departure from the traditional!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013 via mobile

My husband an i have been bin France for 6 weeks and I am happy to report there is a growing trend toward fresh, local, organic and lighter cuisine in France!! Daily meals in restaurants is a challenge of travel when you want to eat healthfully and L'Arpege is a fantastic alternative to the heavy classic cuisine of Alsace. This is a market driven BIO restaurant that offers a small and well selected menu that includes rare vegetarian options.
I started with a salad of greens with a dots of feta cheese. It was very fresh and tasty although I found the amount of salad dressing to be a bit heavy and it wasn't tossed but rather the dressing was spooned or squirted on top. I find a salad lightly tossed with vinaigrette to be more enjoyable and less dressing is needed to highlight the ingredients. My husband had the white asparagus entree with a side of salad and clearly homemade mayonnaise. The asparagus were a bit stringy but clearly very fresh!!
The prices were very fair and also there are excellent biodynamic wines from various regions that are very well priced and delicious.
I had the salmon for my plat and my husband the vegetarian option. Both were beautifully presented with several vegetable sides on the plates. Zucchini, beets, and quinoa came with the generous potion of salmon and I could not finish it all
There were delicious breads served that were clearly artisanal with either walnuts or whole grains and very fresh and tasty.
We were too full for dessert but the choices sounded delicious including a panna cotta with myrtilles that I would have ordered if I had room.
The restaurant was completely full when we left with folks waiting for tables. The host turned away quite a few walk in customers so definitely make a reservation. Also, they are open for lunch daily but only serve dinner Thursday - Saturday. Don't miss this restaurant if you want fresh, clean food and a clear departure from the traditional!!
