Taurus has built up a solid reputation as one of the best bars on Canal Street, which it definitely deserves. Whether inside or outside in good weather, we always feel comfortable here. It's a bar which is aimed at a slightly more upmarket clientele without being overly posy or snooty. I would certainly recommend it, as a bar.
As a place to eat, however, I've been disappointed the last few times. I had fish and chips on the last occasion. It was acceptable, but nothing whatsoever to write home about. It cost over £11, so you are definitely paying for the location rather than the food. I would have put it down as a one-off but, to be honest, I've felt the same way on the last few occasions we've eaten there.
I think some people are made a bit giddy by the excitement of eating in the gay village, and have given Taurus a review very much based on the atmosphere and surroundings rather than the food. It's all part of the package of course, but if I were you, I'd just go for a drink and give the food a miss. Although I would give Taurus four or maybe even five stars as a bar, I really don't think it merits more than three stars as a restaurant.
