“Good hotel if you can get the right price - great for rail users”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

I have stayed at the MacDonald Manchester over a dozen times. It is a nice hotel that is perfectly located for rail users - Piccadilly train station is a less than five minute walk away. Not so ideal for guests with cars - 24 hour parking in the hotel car park is £17.50. (The long stay car park at Piccadilly station is £4 a day all day on weekends and bank holidays. There is also an uncovered car park at the back of the station with 24 hour parking for £2.50 - it is about a 12-15 minute walk away from the hotel.)

Reception staff are excellent - always polite and professional, although the check in process has a few questions which hold up the process a little.

I booked a superior room for £78. It is slightly larger than the standard size rooms at about 17 feet in length, and enough width for a king size bed and a bedside table either side with a little room to spare. There is a small desk with a chair, a small round table, and an armchair. The room is clean and the furnishings are in good condition. The curtains, once drawn, can block out all light from outside. The bathroom is excellent and contains an oversized bathtub - to be fair, it is only slightly bigger than a standard tub - and a good sized walk in shower.

Criticisms are mostly mild. The carpets and curtains are dated and could do with replacing. The television is 23 inches and, when viewed on a bed some 12-17 feet away, is too small. 32 inches should be the minimum for this size of room. There are spotlights in the ceiling which some people may find to be too dim. Views of the city are poor. My room was on the 6th floor and overlooked the back of the hotel, giving me a view of some tower blocks, the train station, and a car park. (The front of the hotel gives a view of a building block and a main road.) Room service is grossly overpriced and comes with a £5 tray charge. The food is very average, even more so given the hefty premium; I recommend you find a good restaurant.

Overall, the hotel has quality rooms and staff. For superior rooms, I would pay no more than £80 a night and £65 for the standard rooms. Bear in mind the parking charges if you are a car user.

I went there for a training and i stayed for 4 nights.
the hotel had 2 lifts but only 1 was working. it was fine during the weekend but once we hit Monday, we started waiting up to 10min for the lift.

They only have cable internet in rooms and wireless in the lobby.. this was fine but it's been like 3 years i didn't use cable and i believe it should all be wireless..

The staff are very nice but i believe they are under-staffed..

The good thing is that they are just next to Picadelly station and this was perfect for transportation

overall my stay was fine

Dear The jam,

Many thanks for taking the time to review us and I can confirm that both of the items that you described are now no longer a concern. We had complimentary WiFi being fitted throughout the whole of the hotel this week and the Lift that was offline was as such because it was having a new engine fitted. We can't predict exactly when a lift engine reaches the end of its life but having turned the matter around in only 3 days is I believe a really positive response to the situation.

However on both issues I understand your disappointment completely and apologise for falling short on your experience with the caveat that both are resolved and so I'm confident that we will be able to deliver a faultless stay on your next visit and so pleased that all other aspects of your 4 day stay were enjoyed.

Kind regards

Just had a spa break at the hotel and cannot fault it at all. The rooms were very spacious and the spa was brilliant. I've stayed in many hotels in the city and this one is far superior. All the staff were very helpful and very accommodating. Looking forward to staying again.

Disappointed with hotel, checked in and then found out it was a whopping 17 quid for parking. Only 1 lift working and private function meant you had to go downstairs and then back up for the restaurant. Shocked to see the lights hanging down in the corridor with wires everywhere and one very small warning sign! Light still live as well!

Dear Paul C,

Many thanks for taking the time to review us it is appreciated and helps us to understand how we can improve on what we do.

I can confirm one of our three guest lifts was offline for a short while as it was having its engine replaced which happens every 5 years so I'm sorry about the timing but I'm not sure it caused a concern with access to our restaurant. The works on our ceilings were to put in the complimentary WiFi and at no time was anyones safety being compromised. Both done to further improve our guests experience I hope you agree but I'm sorry if it inconvenienced you.

Our parking arrangements: Secure, 24/7 CCTV cover, 10 yards from the hotel, Guest only access, Valet parked at guests request with a full compliment of disabled parking facilities is I am assured the very best service in the city and delivers day and night concern free parking in the city centre. There are a number of public car parks but we cannot vouch for their security or ease of access.

Kind regards

Stayed for a girls weekend here, room was huge, and bathroom also, was surprised.
Food was excellent both nights but as it was a deal, the menu was limited, however you could add to it if you wanted to pay more.
Drinks were okay, and a quirky barman made our cocktails one night which added to it being a laugh.
The hotel was busy, but most people went out in town, as we had shopped all day we just relaxed in the bar after dinner, which was fine.
I had a couple of spa treatments, which if I am bring honest I have had better. The spa area was a little confusing and I felt the therapists treated you as a number and could not wait to move on to the next customer. So felt that was wasted cash.
If there was a pool it would really improve the 'spa' customers. However if you are looking for a wknd hotel , clean and good location this is ideal.

I stayed in this hotel for one night with a friend, we really enjoy the place, the service was great and the English breakfast served was nice as well. It worth the money. It's just close to the city center( Piccadilly Graden) The room service was excellent and the room we slept in was clean like heaven. The view from the window was nice too. You won't regret staying in this hotel if you have the chance to be in Manchester.

We stayed in the Macdonald for two nights over the bank holiday weekend and to be honest we were very disappointed. We thought because we had paid £130 per night the room would be something above average which it wasn't, but we at least expected it to be spotlessly clean which it certainly wasn't.
The room at first look seemed clean but once you opened a drawer or looked closely everywhere was full of dust and was grotty. The kettle was full of dirty marks and fingerprints, the bathroom was full of dust and watermarks and there was even what looked like a bloody fingerprint on the back of the bathroom door. The wardrobe sliding door was broken and kept coming off its track and the minibar was full of dust and the plastic fascia was hanging off. The minibar was also completely empty on our arrival and never filled for the duration of our stay. The built in flat screen TV was tiny maybe 18inch which made it a real struggle if not impossible to read the on screen TV Guide whilst in bed and I have perfect eyesight. Breakfast wasn't bad and the staff at breakfast were very friendly but overall the hotel just seemed tired and not worth the money which is a shame because we had booked for a special occasion and wanted it to be nice
