“Very disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

We usually stop in the Crowne Plaza but thought we'd try here, wished we hadn't! The room was very average and the bathroom was very shabby, there was mould and plaster everywhere, the fan didn't work. The hotel is central and ideal for the Christmas markets and the tram stop is right outside.

We stayed overnight on Christmas Day to visit our son. Given the holiday period the staff were helpful and the room was excellent for the stay. The facilities were restricted due to the period, but this did not detract from the good location and helpfulness of those on duty. Would stay again if the necessity arose.

Stayed for one night for a concert at MEN.
Very handy for shopping and close to the station.

The hotel was very clean, with comfortable bed, but the bathroom was in desperate need of modernisation.

We had a view of Piccadilly Gardens, but the windows were so steamed up between the secondary glazing that you couldn't actually see out!!

The trams outside seem to run all night, with horns blaring, even 8 floors up through the secondary glazing you could still hear them!

We stayed here for one night in September, for something of a couple's escape.
The central location was fantastic, putting you right in the heart of the action, making it great for a night on the town and for shopping the following day.
We decided to make the stay extra special and paid for a privilege room and for late [6pm] checkout. The room was spacious, with a sofa area, a very comfortable bed and a coffee machine [as well as the standard kettle]. We also had complementary slippers and bathrobes, which were a nice touch. The view from the window was of Portland Street, but the room was relatively soundproof to drown out the road noise. No complaints on the room, even if the TV was a little bit complicated and the free movie service [included in the cost of the upgraded room] was very limited.
The main complaints we had came from poor communication between staff members. Check-in was incredibly slow. Painfully so, particularly given the room was booked and paid for in advance. The process took in excess of 15 minutes, despite everything being arranged before we arrived. The receptionist also contradicted herself, acknowledging the late checkout, before "reminding" us to check out by 12pm as we left the desk. The following day, shortly after 12pm, the cleaning staff knocked on the door, despite our 'do not disturb' sign. They returned some 20 minutes later and knocked again. When we explained that we had paid for the room until 6pm, they muttered that they had not been informed. Such disturbances hardly made for a relaxing start to the day. Later, when we returned to the room after some lunch, we found that both of our keys failed to work. I am not sure what the cause of this was, but it was quite disturbing given the confusion of our checkout time. It took a further 10 minutes to have the keys reactivated in order to regain entrance to our hotel room.

In short...
Beautiful room, clean and comfortably furnished.
Staff communication could be improved - each interaction with reception took longer than expected. When you pay extra for an additional service, you do not expect to have to explain that to the cleaning team.

Room Tip: From reading other reviews, it definitely seems to be worth the extra money to pay for a privilege r...

We stayed here for one night in December '13 as we were going to a gig in Manchester, The room was clean and perfectly comfortable and adequate to suit our needs. There was an iron and board and a decent hair dryer and kettle with tea/coffee facilities and the hotel was central so close to the shops and Christmas Market. There was enough room for two people to move about without any injuries so I'm not too sure why previous reviewers have put so much focus on room size. The Reception staff were friendly and courteous,The lift worked just fine. Absolutely no complaints and we'll return for another stay. The beds were enormous and very comfortable, too,

Room Tip: We were on the 10th floor, Room 1029. We didn't spend too much time looking out the window to en...

we only stayed one night but wish it could have been longer, we were very pleasantly surprised by this hotel , it was only a 10 minute walk from piccadilly station , the rooms may appear small but there was lots of room for luggage and shopping , the room was spotlessly clean and very quiet for a city centre hotel, the best was the bed i have never slept so well the duvets and pillows are so cosy and comfy its a good job check out is a relaxing 12 noon ! we did not have breakfast at the hotel , but there are mini supermarkets just round the corner and lots of places to get coffee
we found it easy to walk to all the shopping areas and the christmas markets but there are plenty of taxis and buses right out side the hotel. the staff were friendly and we were able to leave our bags at the hotel whilst we went shopping then pick them up en route to the station. i would definitly return to this hotel .

Room Tip: we were on the 9th floor and found it very quiet.

Stayed here for 2 nights in Dec for our anniversary and we had a great time. I paid a bit more for a deluxe double and it was well worth the money. No issues of lack of space I have seen in previous reviews. We had a sofa at the end of the bed facing a TV and a big dressing table next to it. The bathroom even though it was decorated in white was completely spotless! And the shower was the most powerful shower I have ever had which was great! We tried the room service our first night and was not disappointed. Breakfast was nice as well with an amazing view of Piccadilly Gardens. They even left us an anniversary card in the room with some little chocolates on our arrival. Ideal for a shopping weekend, buy some stuff then rather than carry around all day nip back to the hotel and drop it off and back out again. They even let us leave all our luggage including shopping bags in the concierge after we checked out, so we could spend our last day shopping as well before we came home! Only negatives were the ceiling height in the bathroom was really low and the bath tub was tiny (if you was bordering on obese I doubt you would be able to get in the bath!) I am 6ft but my head was only 2 inches off the ceiling which meant if you were really tall you would struggle, even I had to crouch down to get my head under the power shower. And there was no extractor fan in the room which meant when we left the door open it steamed all the windows up in the main room which stayed like that for ages as the windows didn't open. These minor flaw weren't enough to spoil our stay and we are likely to visit again in the future. Thanks Mercure x
