Travelling by tram to Heaton Park with my two children, unfortunately we found it was a long walk to reach the main playground (approx. 30 mins) - we were tired as we had already walked quite a distance already that day. However they had a ball there, especially on the very large slide. The little pet farm was a bit disappointing and didn't catch their attention at all. The toilets closest to the playground were pre-historic but needs must! Although the playground was very busy while we were there, there were so many different pieces of equipment that there wasn't too long of a queue for anything. There was an ice-cream van situated close to the main playground.
We were delighted to get the road tram back to the other end of the park (£1 per person), where we passed a lovely large boating lake and stopped at a fair where the children enjoyed some of the rides, despite the very mucky ground around the rides. The portable toilets at the boating lake were very clean and although we didn't use the coffee shop there, it looked inviting with a nice view over the boating lake.
The park is very well maintained and would make a nice place simply for a walk. Although the park is very large, most of the time we could see people in the distance, so it felt safe.
