Every few months we meet friends in Manchester for a drink, chat and early dinner. I should have had misgivings about 2Kozy when I booked, because it seemed difficult to explain that I didn’t have a “deal” and just wanted to book a table for 4. When we arrived, there was no-one else in the restaurant (which was OK, it was early), it was nicely decorated, with a good space between the tables and very clean. Unusually, we all chose from the set menu, three of us ordering starters and mains, but one wanted a main and a pudding. (Note that the menu was far less interesting than the set menu on the website!) The bottle of Merlot was good and good value. Now we start going downhill. Two of us ordered ham hock and potato cakes. Well, these turned out to be slimy potato with a couple of flecks of something, which I presume were the ham – I exaggerate not. Horrible. Two of us had the steaks. The taste was OK although they were a bit gristly and one, which was supposed to be cooked “medium” was cold in the middle. That’s difficult when they were so thin! Another main was the fish, which seemed to be OK with plenty of vegetables. Two apple pies and ice cream followed for pudding. The filling was like the goo you get in a cheap pie. Apparently it tasted horrible.
As our friends had come in by train, we asked for the bill in good time to be able to stroll back to Piccadilly station together. However, it never appeared and we had to go to the counter to hurry it along, resulting in an unnecessary fast dash to the station. To make matters worse, when our friends checked the bill once on the train, we had been charged for two extra puddings instead of one.
All in all, the meal was very poor, more typical of a pub menu at half the price (and even then you wouldn’t repeat the experience). We will never return, and unless a chef is employed instead of a “warmer upper”, I sincerely hope that 2Kozy won’t be open for much longer.
