“Very Enjoyable Meal!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

Went here on Friday evening, good atmosphere and good food. It was my first experience of American style BBQ food and I really enjoyed it. The chicken wing starter was great as was the tasting platter I had as a main. My girlfriend had the pulled pork main and also really enjoyed it. The only downside was the courgette fries that were very greasy.

Overall a good meal and we will be going back!

“Ok, but a bit disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

I'm American, and quite a fan of American BBQ. In fact, this obsession of mine has taken me on numerous side-trips throughout the American South to sample some of the more famous BBQ joints.

I really wanted to like Southern 11.......it's a restaurant that Manchester could dearly use, and the owner, who I met when they opened, is a very nice fellow, and quite sincere in his wish to produce authentic American BBQ.

The problem is that he really hasn't.

On a recent visit my wife ordered ribs. Anyone who has ever been to a true bbq place in the US knows it's all about the sauce. Sure, cooking for xxx number of hours over yyy type of wood is a factor, but at the end of the day, it's the sauce that makes or breaks it.

The ribs at S-11 came with NO sauce. Someone had smeared a BIT on the ribs, probably about enough for one lone rib...maybe. I asked for some more sauce on the side, which drew a rather puzzled look from the waitress. In due course out came a thimble, filled with sauce. These guys truly do not get it, I thought. From coming here you'd think that BBQ sauce was caviar, ffs, a rare commodity. Apart from the scarcity of their sauce, it's about a 5 out of 10......average...not bad, and not particularly memorable.

Apart from that, the food is pretty good.......the beef short rib being probably the star of the menu. Would I return......maybe....as there is really no alternative in Manchester. But they could be a LOT better if they substantially improved their sauce recipe, and then actually GAVE you some.

Let's call Southern 11 a "Work in progress":-)

“Viva the Dirty South”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

"Tales from the Dirty South" by the Drive By Truckers is one of my all time favourite albums and I can now confirm that dirty food from the dirty south, as dished up by this sleek modern restaurant in Spinningfield is one of my favourite meals of 2012! The reviews on TA were mixed but I can only provide praise from start to finish. The staff were excellent, friendly, well informed and flexible in their approach. Flamboyant cocktails and Anchor Steam provided welcome pre-meal lubrication, but the food was the star for me. As a group we pretty much covered the menu (even the veggie option which is a bit like a teetotaller going in a round with Olly Read and Georgie Best). I can recommend the Deep fried pickle spears, crispy and delicious and the tasting plate of pulled pork, pork belly and roast beef......the Mac and cheese was sublime.....and anyone who comes away from here complaining they're not full should be a Man vs Food regular....these are not meagre portions. I will be back and can't wait for a really filthy \manc day of rain and sleet to tuck myself away with a Bourbon cocktail and a big hunk of dead pig!

“Nice food but poor service at the bar and the table”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

When the bar man spilt maybe 1/5th of my £8 cocktail and mopped his spillage up in front of me I sort of expected him to top it up. When he didn't and I asked him if he could and he said all he could do was top it with cranberry I became annoyed. Finally I said I was not paying for a drink short of what was described in their menu and asked him to make it again, he threw the spilt drink down the sink in front of me in distain and made me another......not the relaxing start I had hoped for! Next to the waitress.....not well organised, and managed to pour nearly a whole bottle of red into just 4 glasses. The 5 th member of our group (aka me!) was provided with a smidgen of what was left, told we had ran out and would I like to order another bottle. Someone did not want me to over indulge at this place. Onto the food, the sliders were excellent as were the chicken wings to start. The truffle and Parmesan fries were nothing special particularly compared to some of the places in the states. Bad food can be compensated by good service but it doesn't really wash the other way round in my book.

“Worth a return visit.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

My daughter and her partner took me here relatively early on a Monday evening, which is obviously not the best time to judge any restaurant. However, I came away vowing to return.

On this particular evening, the restaurant was virtually empty, so we elected to sit outside on the balcony which was fine. Service was spot on in all respects. Being unsure of what to expect, we each had one of their selection of 'sampler platters' which appeared good value. We were presented with 3 little burger buns one with pulled pork, one with beef, and one with a mini burger witjh salad, home cut chips and onion rings. Presentation was good, although the amount of BBQ-type sauce was somewhat overwhelming - I'd rather have this as a side. Value for money was very good at £50 for 3 mains and 3 drinks.

A visit such as this doesn't really do a restaurant justice, so I'll return next time I'm in Manchester. In the meantime, try it. I think you'll find Southern 11 worthwhile.

'Pulled Pork'? Why invent a gimmicky name to disguise what is effectly just slow roasted pork? It was delicious, but made us, and the occupiers of a nearby table, chuckle and raise our eyebrows. I guess 'pulled' sounds better than 'cheaper cut'. LOL!
