“Grim and unclean”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

Stayed here with the family last month.

Firstly, the staff at the Mitre Hotel are unfriendly and do not make you feel welcome. On arrival, we were presented with a list of rules and regulations most of which involved handing over more money. You had to pay to use the remote control!

The rooms we had were very small, smelt of damp and had street noise all night. The rooms had pumps at the back of the toilet which churn all night long and kept us awake.

Breakfast at the Mitre Hotel was terrible. Greasy, cold and rock hard sausage. Fatty bacon and snotty eggs.

Mitre Hotel, a terrible experience.

Room Tip: Do not stay here is my top tip.

not friendly, bad standard of rooms, made to feel like a thief when asking why a deposit of £10 was needed for both a iron and a TV remote ..... "haven't you gone abroad and stolen things from hotels?" ermmm no I have not and I have never paid a deposit for the basics that you expect to find in a hotel either ! ... until I stayed in this hell hole, this is a perfect candidate for the hotel inspector and the décor is terrible, laurence llewelyn bowen evil more eccentric twin appears to have gone nuts in the rooms, leaving me with a headache. worst hotel experience ever !!!!

Room Tip: run away, fast

Stayed here early last year - there were people (not sure if they were 'guests') sat on the floor in the corridor to the rooms, drinking spirits straight out of the bottle. Wouldn't want to stay there with children. Room was very basic but okay, bathroom was not so good - poor water pressure, not very clean etc. The pub downstairs played good music but was very grubby. Shame as the Hotel is in a good location and could be really nice. Would only recommend for hens/stags really.

Great place for a base in the centre of Manchester. The hotel was as expected clean tidy staff very friendly. Has the feel of a boutique hotel. We didnt try the breakfact as we were on a room only basis. Would recommend to use this hotel as a great place to start your night out in Manchester. When we booked there was only a doubleroom. When we got there we were upfradedto a family room.

Definitiely a budget hotel but our family room was very clean and a good size with a good bathroom and shower and nice towels. The staff were friendly and helpful - we couldn't check in until 3 but that's nothing unusual. Nice reception/lounge to wait in. It is in a very central location - next to the cathedral, but this means some noise which is understandable. Walls were a bit thin too - but again nothing we haven't experienced before. The bar(s) underneath the hotel seemed very popular. I would stay here again for a budget, centrally placed hotel.

The location was the main reason for booking this hotel as its only as couple of minutes walk from Manchester Victoria train station plus its right next to the main shopping centre (Arndale centre, Selfridges etc) and The Printworks which has loads of places to eat. That was the best thing about the hotel.

We weren't allowed to check in until 3pm which was a problem as we had an event to go to so ended up leaving out bags infront of the reception which wasn't very safe or secure as anyone could have took them.

The room wasn't great. The size was good but there were marks all over the carpet, on the walls and even on the bedding. There was no toilet roll in the bathroom and it took ages for any warm water to come through the taps.

You have to put a deposit of £10 for a tv remote and £20 for a hairdryer! real inconvenince.

Also, it was VERY noisy at night and in the morning from people walking by. Very early in the morning there were a lot of drinks lorries dropping off deliveries which made a lot of noise. The bells on the nearby church go off early as well, and there is generally a lot of people going by so when you have the window open its very noisy and I was woken a lot in the morning from 5am onwards.

The price is good as the location is great, but the actual rooms aren't very nice despite the nice pictures. Didn't find any of the staff very friendly or nice either. It came across more of a hostel and it needs a good clean and to re-decorate the family room we stayed in.

Stayed for one night in June; we wanted somewhere cheap and central. This met those criteria perfectly. Price was low and the location is great- right opposite Manchester Cathedral in a lovely part of the city, extremely close to the main shopping areas and pubs/restaurants. There is no car park; you are advised to use Market Place NCP, a short walk away. Don't bother though. Another few yards along this road you will find Travelodge Manchester Central, which has a long stay car park below it that is open to the public, and over half the price of the NCP.

The hotel is everything I would expect from a budget option. If you want a 'nice' hotel that you want to spend a bit of time in, this aint for you. If you just want somewhere to sleep that's in a good location however, this is the place. Reception on the first floor above pub/function room run by the hotel. If you want a remote for the TV in your room it's a £10 deposit at reception. It's an old building, with no lift and narrow, creaky corridors and staircases. Decor throughout clearly been done on the cheap and is rather tired.

The room itself was small, but with a huge bathroom that was almost the same size as the main room, and with lots of unused space. This seemed really odd. The decor and furbishments were mostly quite modern but obviously very, very cheap. Generally clean, but with some big cobwebs in corners. Tea & coffee tray and kettle in the room. The TV was surprisingly impressive, a 37" flatscreen that seemed collossal in this modest room.

The mattress on the bed was absolutely atrocious, completely flat and worn out with protruding springs. Must have been decades old. We had to sleep on top of the quilt for comfort, taking it out of it's cover and using that as a sheet. It was stupendously hot, despite the large open window (no air con of course). There was also an awful lot of noise from the surrounding pubs etc., but this quietened off significantly after midnight. This was however a thursday night; over the weekend I would expect more prolonged noise.

In conclusion, this provided the cheap, central, no-frills accommodation we were after. The standard throughout is about what I expected, apart from the appalling mattress, which is my only significant complaint. Would probably come back for another one night stay if the price was right, but for a longer stay it would definately be worth spending a few more quid on somewhere better.
