“Excellent Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2009

The boutique hotel was beautiful and in a perfect location. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. The rooms were nice- I especially loved the red and black decor. I stayed here 1 night, and wish I could have stayed longer. The Spa looked real nice, but appts need to be made more than a day in advance. I def recommend this hotel for anyone- long stay or short stay- location is perfectly near Picadilly Train Station.

I like cool and funky... I like great design... I like hotels off the mainstream. Never having visited a Malmaison before, my expectations were high. However, this just felt like a formularised boutique hotel, with little authentic cool and charm, just the decorative formula designed in galactic HQ. You know what I mean - like Starbucks, TGI Fridays, the Pitcher and Piano, and all those other places that were great when they first hit the scene, but now just feel like they are made on a production line somewhere outside Skelmersdale!

Anyway, back to the Mal. There's nothing really super wrong with the place, but it's just a bit of a cliched disappointment. Many won't like the dark lighting and the dark colourings - one colleague rightly said it had the feel of an empty nightclub. The bathrooms feel remarkably dated for a modern hotel and I, for one, didn't really like the toiletries.

I won't return - if I want boutique, I'll go to Gt St John. If I want comfy business stopover, there are plenty more comforatble and cool options in this great city.

I stayed in Malmaison, Manchester in a Superior double which was almost £300 for 2 nights. I was expecting to be blown away with all aspects of the Hotel. I was not. The room its self was really big but very tired looking, Straight away I noticed paint flaking off handles and Light shades falling off walls.

The staff are pretty helpful but seemed a bit like robots, all saying exactly the same thing and speaking at a million miles an hour.

We used the Spa which was really good and pretty reasonably priced as was the bar. The food in the brasserie was also good adn not too expensive.

We booked about 10 rooms for our employees and clients while working in town for the week. We did get a great rate at 85 pound per night for basic rooms, 105 for larger rooms.

This hotel has its pros and cons like all. But overall it just seemed like they were trying too hard. All black and deep red furnishings, dark throughout...the guy at the front desk couldn't even see the map on the counter and it was the middle of the day. The darkness issue extends to the hotel room bathrooms, the lighting is bad and with all black floor to celing stone tiles, don't plan on getting a good look at yourself in the mirror.

The major downfall was the Net, or lack there-of. Its free in the rooms, but only in 30minute intervals, it boots you and asks you to re-login every half hour. And the speed is awful. I tested it daily for a week and got 90k-100k on average, basically you get dialup speeds. Out staff had to leave the hotel to get work done. There is no business center if you need to print, good luck.

There is a DVD player in the room and a nice 30inch flat screen. But there is not entertainment options on the TV, can't buy movies. You have to get a DVD from the front desk, they have about 40 not new releases.

Stay at the Crown Plaza Manchester or the Raddisson Edwardian (its the best hotel in town.)

We generally enjoyed our 3 night break at the Mal - its a great looking hotel, located right beside Manchester Piccadilly station, though not in the old building as depicted in the photos. There was building work going on on the forecourt directly outside the hotel over the weekend which looked bad and also generated a huge amount of dust. Our room was a good size but the view from the window overlooked a dodgy looking side road. Our main criticism was the standard of cleanliness - there was a thin layer of dust everywhere and on the first night we arrived the bathroom bin had not been emptied since the previous visitor and was full of feminine hygiene products and used razor blades! The second night the cleaner did empty the bin but did not rinse or give us new tea cups or wine glasses, and did not replenish the tea and coffee facilities, or leave us a form to order breakfast with for the following morning. Disappointing for a room which costs over £100 per night! We had lunch in the restaurant on Sunday but unfortunately they only had two choices for the roast - pork or beef which left me with a pea risotto...

stayed here on the 27th of june for take that concert. booked a suite at this the hotel 6mths ago, never recieved confirmation from them, rang them several times asking for confirmation never recived it. then 1 week before we went i rang again to double check booking as still no confirmation, not even a email either. everytime i rang i was told my booking was there and no problems. anyway when arrived at hotel there was no booking for me what so ever, i was told i couldnt have a suite as i hadn't booked one and they were full. they then reckoned they found my booking but it was for the day before and i had cancelled it. they then gave us superior room at a discounted rate.. should of been for free. apart from the the hotel was pleasent and the staff were extremley apologetic over what happened and even provided us with free transport to old trafford for the concert. would maybe stay here again not sure though as the booking fiasco has put me off.

OK, first the good about the Manchester Malmaison. Its very close to Piccadilly Station. The bed was very comfy, and the aircon works.

Less good is the fact that my promised Guardian never arrived. The iPod connector cable for the stereo was missing. Even less good is the fact that its 3pm and housekeeping have still not been and cleaned my room.

But worst of all is the fact that when we got back from the Kraftwerk gig last night, as we got out of the lift, there was a huge dollop of (I assume, otherwise someone had smuggled a HUGE dog into the hotel with them) human turd slap bang in the middle of the carpet. Yes, one of our fellow guests had passed comment on the lax standards of housekeeping by going further than posting a whiny comment on Facebook. Its grim Up North.

I reported the "chocolate mousse" accident to reception, and it has now been cleaned up, but no-one has contacted me to say either thanks for warning us, or even better, sorry that you had to find a huge pile poo on your way back to your room.
