A friend and I stayed here for one night in a basic twin-bedded room. We went to the Green Day musical production a 2-minute walk away at the Palace Theatre next door. You can see the hotel's landmark clock right from your seat on the train approaching Oxford Road station (beware that Ox Road doesn't have an elevator - I decided to take the train to Picadilly and cab it back as I couldn't face all the stairs with the case.)
On the whole, I really liked the Palace. It has character and ambience. It used to be an old assurance company headquarters, and there is one corridor called 'the old safe room' where the hallways are lined with old enormous wooden safes. The entranceway is spectacular. Before I stayed here, I read some reviews which spoke very negatively about the state of the rooms. In the end, I booked it as it was such a good deal (received a special offer via email).
I'm glad I did book it. Yes, the room was tired and needs a facelift. There was an area outside of the shower where water had been dripping for years such that the floor was sunken. The heat didn't work properly and there was only one small plug-in heater, so the room was never warm.
But, it was grand. There were high vaulted ceilings with pillars and an amazingly-shaped window. There was character to it. But if you're looking for sleek marble and immaculate, predictable interior decor, this is not your place - go to a Hilton (well, other than the Olympia, perhaps).
I loved the in-room coffee/tea, and I was able to get free internet for half an hour with the cable they provide in-room.
The breakfast was OK, even if the food was a little on the cold side. We ate both breakfast and dinner in the beautiful attached restaurant. I can see why people have wedding dinners there.
Staff was nice and we were able to have a bit of a late checkout. The free left luggage facility was very helpful.
In short, I would recommend this property for its wonderful location (right near trendy bars and cafes, and the theatre and Ox Rd train), and its grandeur. But perhaps don't stay here if your tastes require rooms to be super modern and shiny.
