“could do better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2014 via mobile

Quite dated hotel has had a refurbishment in most rooms, mine was huge with two double beds and a lounge area and work desk. On the 9th floor, I asked for a quiet room. It was OK until I went to bed and turned off the TV, then I noticed the noise from the lift shaft and running water noise from the air con. The air-con didn't work on cool setting, so the room was very warm, neither would the window open. So why a 4 when there were these problems, well the room was nice, breakfast was good and the staff were friendly and helpful if there was free wi-fi in the room and the few niggles were sorted,it would have been a 5, without the great staff a 3. I was in room 907.

I have to be honest ! The main reason I chose this hotel was the fact that its only 50 meters from one of the best curry houses in the aria. ( East Z East )
But beeing a part of the marriott group, one may expect a good stay.
And, hmm In not sure, or just beeing picky, but it was okay I guess.
They had no European plug converter, ( I know, I should have my own, but most hotels can provide you with one. ) and the Wifi connection was lousy, I only got a good connection when I was close to the door which was not very handy at all. Hotels should realize that a good wifi connection is very important, specially if you're a business hotel.

So.. perhaps Im just beeing picky.

This was our second stay here at the Renaissance and since last time they've refurbished the rooms and they are definitely much brighter and smarter. However the bathroom in our room was still the old suite, plus a few fittings were dodgy, eg the bathroom light would only actually come on after one had switched it on and off about 6 times. And there was a bizarre beep that chirped once every 5-8 minutes coming somewhere from the bathroom, perhaps the phone? Who uses that phone anyway?

However my main gripe was that the hotel does not advertise the fact that the Virgin Active gym can only be used by hotel guests during off-peak times. So if you're planning to stay at the hotel Monday-Friday you won't be able to use the gym when you might ordinarily have wanted to, ie between 4pm-8pm. However off-peak includes all day at the weekends, which meant I was able to enjoy using the vast Virgin Active gym which is about a 7-8min walk from the hotel in the Printworks complex. Huge cardio areas, clean changing rooms, showers etc plus a big pool. If you check Marriott's website they just say that guests enjoy complimentary access to a local gym, which is true, but not the whole truth...

Breakfast was efficient although the quality of the cold items area (eg breads, cereals etc) could be improved. The bread was left uncovered, which meant that the upper edges of the bread had gone dry and stale. Perhaps they should just cover the breads with a tea-towel? Also the toasters were a pain to use, one of them took absolutely ages to brown two slices of bread. It's like no one from the hotel has actually tried using the toasters to realise how slow they are. And lastly there was a poor selection of cereals, no bran flakes, and no muesli one day. Hardly unconventional items to miss off a breakfast buffet. Hot items on the breakfast were standard English fare and quality was OK.

Location of hotel is good. We walked to/from Manchester Piccadilly in about 15-20mins.

Room Tip: You may find the "canal side" quieter.

Never usually leave reviews this is my first one but I was so touched by the staff at this hotel!
I stayed there Sat night room 504.
Had a great night out but unfortunately I tripped and badly bruised my hand. As soon as I got back to the hotel one of your staff George really went out of his way to make sure I was ok, got me ice and escorted us back to the room with a jug of water too (think he knew we would be hungover the next day :-)
We were talking to all of your staff who even gave us a number to call for a pizza and got them to deliver to our room!!!
I have stayed in a lot of high end hotels but have never ever encounter customer service like I did at your hotel.
They really did go the extra mile!
Trust me for me to write a review is a first so well done to all of your team and please managers reward George who was working Sat 19th April as he deserves to be acknowledged.
Oh as for the review on the hotel itself... Clean, near the nightlife, excellent service, smooth checkin and checkout although pricey for the carpark, room was perfect very spacious, but windows didn't seem to open not sure if that is intended.
Once again thank George for helping me and going above and beyond, I will make sure we stay at that hotel next time.

My partner and myself stayed over two nights (bank holiday) The location as others have mentioned is great! Our room was spacious and nicely decorated however very cold at night time despite having the heating at 30 degrees all night, the rooms do have a hair dryer and iron however no fridge. The bath room was very clean and our cleaner did a great job the second day of our stay. The reception and waiters were all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was nice and fresh - everything you need! A solid 4* city centre hotel. We will return.

Just returned from a two night stay in this lovely central hotel. All staff members were very helpful and pleasant. The room was much larger than many of the hotels I have stayed in and it had everything needed to make our stay enjoyable. The breakfast was super with ample choice. My only complaint was it felt a tad chilly especially at night and when we tried to turn up the thermostat it did not seem to make any difference to the room temperature. I did mention this at the reception desk and was assured this issue would be addressed. Would I stay there again? Most definitely

Had an overnight stay in this bright modern city centre hotel.. As with previous reviewers nothing from the outside but beautiful inside. Two double beds, large bathroom, tea/coffee making facilities in the very big room, even a good sitting area. Reception staff welcoming as were all the staff in bar and restaurant. Lovely cooked or continental breakfast, plenty of choice. Short walk to plenty bars and restaurants. If we need to return to Manchester it will definitely be The Renaissance.
