“Average Business Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2007

Stayed here early January, 2 nights mid-week while on business. STaff were courteous & friendly, check in & out was reasonably efficient. Food in the restaurant / bar was expensive for what it was. The major downside with this hotel was it could have done with a makeover 5 years ago. The room was clean enough, again though it was quite dated.

I recently stayed here with work. The hotel was in a great location, close to the station and Piccadilly. Work also got me a good rate - considerably less than ones previous reviewers have quoted. The rate I paid was probably a better reflection on the quality of the hotel than some of the higher prices the hotel can charge. The hotel was tired and shabby - both in public areas and bedrooms. Carpets were threadbare and walls were stained and marked. The furniture and bathroom fittings had all seen better days and decor was mis-matched and dated in places. However, aside from the dirty marks on the walls, I found the rooms to be very clean - which made me forgive the hotel's shabby appearance, at least it was clean! It appeared that staff were determined to make the very best of what they had. The staff in the hotel were also very friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble for them. The only real complaint I had during my stay was the fact that the breakfast service wasn't great. Hot food was very slow to be re-stocked and toast took an age to make in a large, standard household toaster. Queues built up as guests waited for their breakfast. This was really the only fault I could pick with it (shabiness aside) and admitedly it could have been worse!

  • Liked — Location - very central
  • Disliked — It's shabby appearance, but at least it was reasonably clean!

Staying on business. The room was comfortable and the breakfast was fine. We didn't eat dinner here.

A good average hotel but with no on site parking. The nearest car park costs £14.50 a day.

What can i say, very disappointed with this hotel.
Reception and hallways seem to be the only area of this hotel that have been decorated in the past 50 years.
The rooms are disgraceful, i have stayed in better hostals . Peeling wallpaper, one wall bare plaster, yellow damp stains all over the ceiling.
Mould in the bathroom.. 4star what a joke.. Save your money stay in a travel lodge !!!!

Stayed for one night, which was more than enough, in a very small double room. The air vent in the ceiling was hanging down on one side, there were two black marks on the ceiling above the bed caused by the wall lights and the bathroom was a disgrace with a broken and rotting bath panel. I couldn't walk around to the other side of the bed due to a freestanding air-con unit in the corner The buffet in the restaurant was cold and uninspiring, although they did bring out more hot food when asked.
Breakfast was also sadly lacking with the staff wandering about without purpose or direction. Had to seek out the coffee pot myself. This hotel should be either down graded or updated to the standard it purports to be.

I was sent by the company to stay at the Thistle Manchester - all I can say is that I was glad it wasn't my money! They were charged £136 for a double room for single occupancy for 1 night's B&B! For that amount of money you can get much better accommodation in the centre of Manchester elsewhere.
The hotel is in an excellent location, just opposite Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink and Bus station and also just 5 mins walk from Piccadilly railway station. It is also very handy for China Town and many restaurants and pubs, and is also a short walk to the main shopping area.
However, the hotel staff are quite surly, and the room I was given was a very small double - I would have been struggling with another person in there! - the bathroom was very cramped also. However, there was a TV and tea/coffee making facilities, so fairly standard for a hotel.
The corridor outside my room had a hole in the ceiling next to the fire siren box and water was dripping through, so they obviously need to spend some money on this place - very poor compared to other Thistle hotels I have stayed in.
The breakfast in the morning was less than inspiring but did the job. I did not use the leisure facilties so cannot comment on them.
In summary, I suggest that you shop around and get better value for money elsewhere!

Given the price we were expecting something very much better. It is without a doubt the worst value hotel I have stayed in in England. The double room was basically a single with a very small double bed squeezed into a tiny room. Only one towel etc. rather gave it away, but the reception insisted it was a double. The bathroom had fungus around the bath, paint peeling off the walls. A really grubby place with narrow dirty corridors which needs a major refurbishment. Location is good, but it should be rated two star or less. Typically overstated and pretentious website which made the disappointment all the worse. Luckily we had only booked for 2 nights.
