“Avoid if at all possible!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2007

Five words not contained in the Thistle official website for this hotel (which for some strange reason doesn't have a "Rooms" tab...probably because there are no positive words to describe the rooms):
1. Tired
2. Shabby
3. Small
4. Grubby
5. Overpriced
Booked in on business for two nights; unfortunately Man U were at home, so all the other hotels were booked up, otherwise I'd have turned straight round and gone elsewhere.
Issues encountered in 2-day stay:
- only two lifts, one of which was out of commission for both days. A sign recommended use of the service lift, which was utterly filthy
- general dirt in corridors, especially round the aircon units, where the surrounding ceiling was black
- small, tired, grimy room, with peeling wallpaper and a bottom sheet that didn't even fit the mattress
- small, tired, grimy bathroom, with stained bath with side panel rotten and bowed
- shower curtain so dirty I'd rather mop up a flooded floor than use it
- rubbish on bath surround left by previous guest and not cleaned away by housekeeping
- newspaper delivered one day out of two

I still can't believe that the list price for a room in this hotel is £160-£180 per night. You get a better, bigger, cleaner room at any of the Premier Travel Inns locally, let alone the Ibis or Novotel.

Unless it's the only place within 50 miles with an available room, and you really, REALLY have to be in Manchester, avoid this hotel at all costs.

Hotel in great location, agree rooms a bit small but is an old building, so I dont think this can be improved on, saying that rooms were clean and had everything you need

As of July 2007:

- No cable/satellite television, 5 channel terresterial with a few movies
- Standalone air conditioning units not built into the walls.
The output hot air tube having to be fed through the room's window (eg it needs to be open).
- Flaking paint on the wall of the rooms
- The building is obviously ex-office space, as the rooms are small and tightly packed together.
- The corridors look like they haven't been decorated since the 1970s
- Lift takes a long time to climb floors (seems to also pre-date the 1980s)
- £5 surcharge for all room service
- £10 per hour for late checkouts
- Staff were also unfriendly in my experience

I've stayed in less expensive, higher quality hotels in the London's West End.

after reading alot a negative reviews i wasn't looking forward to staying here but it business and i didn't get a choice. i am happy and suprised to be saying that my stay was wonderful and the only negative thing i have to say is the lack of air con in the rooms although fans are provided they are noisy when trying to sleep.
the maids were fantasic and i had clean fresh bedding every day throughout my 5 night stay. my room was immaculate everytime i came back in the evening.
as my company had paid for dinner every night i ate in the hotel restaurant and the staff were fantastic, they remebered my unusual food allergy after only mentioning it once on the first night, they remebered which bread i prefered and ensured i got it each night, rememered my room number as well. the food was really good and although the menus are small one does change each night and i was allowed to swap and change between the 2.
reception ensured i knew exactly where my business venues were and gave me clear directions as i'd never been to manchester before and were also really helpful when my car got a flat tyre.
the decor seems to be being updated but it is nowhere near as bad as other reviews have said. my room was a comfortable size although the bathroom was a tad on the small side.
do give this hotel a chance as it is really quite good.

Agree totally with other negative reviews. I wonder how this place has not gone out of business yet, as it's expensive and bad. Wallpaper peeling in rooms, corridors, stale smoke smell everywhere. Black mould in the bathroom (I mean how much effort is it to spray a little bleach on it?), light fixtures are wobbly and of not much use (20 kW bulbs, if that), nice brown patches on the ceiling from heating unit and lights. The room is full of appliances aimed at replacing built-in units that are not working - one may fall over the fan and space heater as one enters the room. The restaurant is very nice though, so go and eat there, just don't stay in the hotel. Oh, and the exercise room is useless - about 5 sqm in total with an old bike and a stepper that was made a couple of centuries ago - they do have a less than twenty year-old treadmill though.

  • Liked — The wireless internet in the rooms, restaurant
  • Disliked — Everything else

Well stayed at the thistle in July this year, to meet up with an old friend. Chose this hotel as didnt really know Manchester that well and it was close to the nearby Picadilly station and centrally located. On arrival the staff were helpful and allowed me to check in slightly early which was great. The room as stated in other reviews was quite small and compact but amply furnished the only thing I would really say was there was no music centre or DVD player which was a shame, the tv was abit complicated to see what channels were on offer!! The inhouse menu was rather over priced but loads of places to eat round and about so wasnt too fussed. As for other facilities the swimming pool was small but warm and staffed by a really friendly guy, at the time of our stay the spa pool wasnt working :( but he tried several times to get it going!! .. plenty of towels and changing rooms were secure. We arrived back at the hotel at approx 4am and had a few problems getting the card thingy to work ended up going down to the reception which was abit of a pain as we were on the 5th floor. !! The room was incredibly warm but had an air con unit which once u figured out how to get it working was fine.. All in all an enjoyable stay give it a go if your after a hotel in the heart of the city close to the nightlife this one would be a good choice

  • Liked — location
  • Disliked — size of the rooms, no dvd or music system .. :(

I stayed here for one night in June with work. To be honest it's a bit of a dump! The corridors were dirty with ripped wallpaper and holes in the ceiling. The room itself was very small and a bit dated but clean enough.

On the up side the hotel is in a good location and the breakfast was delicious.

I wouldn't stay here again and wouldn't be happy if I had paid my own money to stay. We got a discounted rate with work but the actual room rate advertised in reception was way way overpriced (about 150 for single 180 for double)!!

Stayed June 2007
