“A grand old hotel-tired around the edges”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2012

Stayed in the Britannia for one Saturday night in January. The hotel is truly grand with a lovely reception area and a massive chandelier. The bar was welcoming and friendly and the breakfast buffet was excellent. The room was clean and comfortable. The decor was a bit tired and the hotel is in need of a bit of TLC. My only real gripe was the very loud music that kept my wife and I awake until 2am; we think this was due to what looked like a nightclub beneath the hotel but could have been coming from inside the hotel itself. This aside, we were happy with our stay and the location of the hotel could not be better-right in the center of Manchester. The very loud music was, however, a big negative.

Cheap, cheerful and well located. The entrance and stairwell are amazing considering what a modern hotel would have done with the space. They certainly don't make hotels like this anymore. That said, this hotel could really do with a massive overhaul. The room was as clean as I could expect but the decor, paintwork and other details were tired. The bathroom showed evidence of damp and mould, however, I couldn't fault the hower pressure and immediate hot water. Even some 5star places don't get that right. Breakfast was an extra charge, although the cooked breakfast was almost inedible. Staff were friendly and polite.

Having stayed here before,we wrote a review back in November 2010, we decided to return to this hotel. The reception is impressive with a magnificent chandelier hanging from the fith floor ceiling right down to the ground floor. The outside, with all the lights on the front of the building and the main staircase look grand, although the bedrooms are dated. The restaurant has been refurbished and still serves an excellant buffet breakfast. We had a standard room on the fifth floor which was warm and comfortable. In the bathroomthe the taps were very loose when we tried to turn them on but with loads of hot water and a good shower. There was some evidence of mildew on the tiles. We were supplied with plenty of toiletries and clean towels every day.
As a budget hotel, for a central location Manchester it was good vakue for money and we will be back.

Room Tip: Avoid the lower floors.

Worst stay of my life!!! This is the first hotel I've ever been to and felt disgusted and angry! The rooms look like something off heartbeat but dirty . There was a tv but unfortunately couldn't turn it on because the remote in the room was for a different tv.

The noise was unbearable I've stayed in magaluf and this was worse than that! The people who we had next door and opposite the corridor were up partying all night with a girl they'd brought back from town . The staff didn't even do anything! Overall worst stay of my life and I wouldn't recommend it to a dog . The only good thing going for this hotel is the restaurant down stairs.

I have stayed at this hotel loads of times due to the location. It is right behind Canal Street and near all the night life. The staff are really friendly and always happy to help. You can get some good rates/deals for this hotel through the Britannia website. One thing I would point out, the saver rooms are internal rooms with no windows! I would always pay that little bit more for a room with a window!! I have stayed a couple of times in an internal room and I didnt feel safe/comfortable not seeing daylight. The location is brilliant and cant get more central than this...5minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly's train station. This hotel is great, lovely building inside and out. I would really recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: The saver rooms are internal rooms...they are OK for an overnight stay....but I would rather pay a l...

By the look of the previous reviews, it seems that staying here can be somewhat of a lottery but we decided to buy a ticket and book a room.
For £45, we got a perfectly acceptable twin room with a good shower. Decor was a little dated but it wasn't run down or dirty by any stretch of the imagination.
No view from the room but we didn't come to Manchester to sit on our beds and watch the night-life through our window.
Full English buffet breakfast was included and wasn't bad at all. Good selection of fruit, nuts and juices too, if I was struggling to find fault I'd say that the coffee wasn't great but on the whole, not a bad experience.
Decent hotel, great price, perfect location 5 minutes walk from Piccadilly station.
