If you love old and rare books, gothic architecture and a winning combination of the old and the new this is the place for you. John Rylands library embarked on an exciting new project of development ten years ago and since then it has not looked back. With innovative workshops and varied and interesting tours and talks plus a chance to handle some quite rare objects it is a venue for all the family. I became a friend of the John Rylands many years ago and love the place. The shop has excellent choice of both things you might want for yourself and to give as gifts but for me the exploration of the older parts of the building where you can soak up the atmosphere and almost feel Mrs Rylands breathing down your neck (in a nice way) is always a highlight of a visit. The staff have worked very hard to make the library a place where not only Mancunians feel at home but where visitors are welcomed from all over the world. It is not only a library but a museum of Manchester and its heritage.
