The annex to the main part of the hotel is just across the road on Canel Street. Although this website deals strictly speaking with the hotel it must be said that Manchester whilst it is a good place to visit at night it does turn into one of the most unpleasant cities I have had the misfortune to stay in.

In a lot of cases it's the hotels that let a city down but in this case it's the city that lets the hotels down. The city turns in to a place where at night its appears that norm to get into a fight, throw up and urinate in doorways and pick a fight with the local police. This whole persona gives the hotel industry in Mancheser a bad name and although the city may a rough around the edges the Rembrandt Hotel is ok to stay in.

The plus points to the hotel is that is placed only a short walk from Piccadilly train station and the main bus station is just around the corner (you can see them both from the door). Also you have to take into account that the hotel is right in the middle of the gay village and is next to a nightclub and various pubs although none of them are a problem. The big worry about the place is that the area attracts a mixed young crowd who are hell bent on getting drunk and although not all threatening it's not the place I would send my mother too. Also there is a burger bar next door but one and wafts of smelly burgers can be a bit intrusive if you leave the windows open. Leaving the windows open in the evening at the weekend is not recommended as all you'll get is a barrage of expletives and bottles been smashed on the floor on the pavement. Plus the whole area looked like a tornado had ripped through the local rubbish dump and scatterd half of it around the outside of the hotel.

As for the rooms, they are fairly comfortable but the pillows could of been a bit bigger as been a big bloke I had to stack 3 of them up to get any support! We also had trouble with the heater as for most of the visit we couldn't warm the room up even though the temprature outside was near Zero degrees and snowing! We had no chair or table to use. Our shower room was very big so no problems there but the towels felt like they had been starched and were very hard to the touch. Both the bedroom and bathroom were very clean.

We had a safe in the room that was un-useable due to the wrong instructions printed on top so. Also throughout the night there was constant banging doors due to poor sound proofing and over active door closures.

Breakfast meant a quick walk over the road to the main hotel and it was rather like any B+B breakfast. It involved the cheapest ingredients including sausages that must of been deep frozen, not very nice tinned tomatos, microwaved beans and gererally the food was mediocre, tasteless and on the second day clearly served cold. I got the impression that my plate was kept on a burner for some time as the eggs had dried out somewhat.

In my opinion I would suggest you pay the extra pounds and book into a "big chain' hotel as at least that way you know what you are getting.

One plus point is that one the whole the people are freindly and welcoming and they make good of a bad situation.

I for one won't be staying there again unless I have to. It's a bit of shame rearly as Manchester is trying to shrug off it's "Err it's grim up north" image with a city centre that deserves better.

Highlights are the Science Museum (with views of the Coronation Street set), URBIS and The Exchange. Lows are the nightlife and general unsafe feel to city at night.
