“Standards slipping”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

We've been for Sunday lunch previously so we know what you get. This was our first visit since the takeover by Holts brewery and we were underwhelmed. Our booking (done face to face) could not be found in the book, but they had no trouble fitting us in as the dining room was ominously empty. Starters came.Fine but over eager waitress cleared one empty plate before my partner had finished. Mains arrived.Overcooked carrot and swede and ONE mangetout, cool Yorkshire pud, very lightly roasted spuds but 2 big slices of hot, delicious beef served, alas,on tepid plate.
Very, very average food, service dopey, only one waiter appeared to know what he was doing.
Plus Holts IPA@£3-40! I can buy this city centre for £2-15 so given they are making a profit, another £1-25 in Chorlton must pay for a lot of ambience!

“They had run out of everything 1 1/2 hours before service ended!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

We visited this pub as a group of 7 to celebrate after my sister and myself had completed the Wilmslow half marathon. We booked a table for 4:30pm, a good hour and a half before food service was advertised to finish.

When we were seated, we were told that there was no fish and chips left. We then selected our dishes and the waitress came over to take our order, only to tell us that they had run out of beef roasts. The 4 who wanted the beef, changed their orders to lamb or chicken. 10 minutes passed before the waitress came back over to tell us that they now only had 2 chicken liver pates left (we had ordered 3) so we had to cancel one starter. 5 minutes later, we were then told they had run out of roast chicken so 2 people people had to change their orders for a second time.

When the meals came (after a considerable wait) they had brought a lamb burger instead of a lamb roast even though the waitress had read our order back to us. A further wait was needed for the lamb roasts to arrive.

Even after this hassle, we were still keen for a dessert and coffees and asked for the menus. When the waiter brought them over, he told us that they only had 1 of the 5 desserts on offer left! We promptly paid for our meal and left without buying anything else as this was the final straw!

It was with astonishment that we were told by the waiting staff that they "only have a finite number of each dish and they regularly run out early on sunday" and "the menu does warn you about this". I was amazed that someone in management had made the decision to reprint the menu to say "make sure you get in there early because when they are gone they're gone" rather than simply thinking we run out of everything by 3pm on a sunday (even though food service is advertised as 12-6), maybe we should order more or only advertise our food service as 12-3! To have people who want to spend money in your pub and are unable to makes absolutely no business sense!

The result for their business is that they had a table of 7 who would have probably spent an extra £50 at least leaving unsatisfied and unlikely to ever return to spend more money in the future.

The only reason I haven't given this a terrible rating is the food (that they had left!) was actually of a reasonable standard, although still not worth the hassle!

“Errr well it is Chorlton Green”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

The service is... well laid back... but very friendly.Drinks - no Sauvinon Blanc or the bin end Zinfandel on the board??, I had to have ice in my wine as it was lukewarm. There were no specials, which the menu had told us to ask our waiter for! But the food was above average, generous portions and well cooked, plus arrived quickly and atmosphere was very pleasent. Would go back.

“Going downhill???”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

We used to eat here a lot, and were quite surprised to find that it had changed hands recently. We went in on a very cold winter's night, and were disappointed that the fire wasn't lit as it always used to be. The food was not bad - I had a very tasty and meaty beefburger with decent fries, our friend had a cumberland sausage and mash which was good, and my partner had haddock and chunky chips, which he said was 'OK'. A bit overpriced on the menu prices, but this was mitigated by the fact that on Monday nights you get two meals for the price of one, which makes it good value. Still has a good selection of guest beers, which we enjoyed. We'll go again, and see if it holds up as a reliable place to go with friends and family for a casual meal out.

“Disgraceful cold insipid overpriced food, rude male staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

We went to the Horse and Jockey in Chorlton tonight and the food was a DISGRACE. I ordered lamb with flatbread for£11.75 not cheap and what arrived was lamb BURGER accompanied by cold frys. My lovely partner had potatoes braves which were fridge cold covered in warm red slop. They took away our meals and heated his up and said I could order another dish but before I'd even ordered returned with my partners re-heated poorly assembled plate. The manager came who was arguing with us that the food was fine and said, i quote "you are the only two people who've ever complained". It was Valentines night for pity sake, we were meant to eat together! It's the second time in as many weeks I've had a dreadful meal - the Sunday lunch was appalling. We will never go back, there are too many nice Chorlton or Didsbury choices.
