“Excellent Museum in Manchester - Bring your Mummy!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

As a boy in the early 1970's I loved this place - and on revisiting recently I saw some of the same exhibits I saw back then with more than a bit of a fond chuckle...

A huge Victorian gothic building attached to Manchester University on Oxford Road houses a diverse series of collections, primarily:

1. Natural History (including dinosaurs!)
2. Anthropology / Ethnology
3. Science & Technology
4. Egyptology

Great for a rainy day out with the kids or just to stimulate your noodle - Manchester Museum has a World-leading reputation for maxillo-facial reconstruction models from Egyptian mummies and latterly for forensics, and of course being linked-in with Jodrell Bank, Barnes Wallace, Rutherford etc - have a long & impressive involvement in everything from space exploration & telemetry, physics, radionuclear research, medicine, as one would expect.

Great collections, something for everyone & definitely worth a visit.

“Underwhelming.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

This museum is very boring. It's hard to say exactly why this is since the Museum is home to many impressive artifacts.
I think that there are too many things grouped together and too much space focused on boring things - they may be historically important but all those vases are just tiresome.
The labelling system means that reading about pieces become laborious so you just end up walking off, and since you're not reading about them, why even bother to look at them.
Compared to Leeds City Museum (which is smaller and has less exhibits) The Manchester Museum is incredibly boring. It shouldn't be but it is!!!
Furthermore, the whole place is a higgledy-piggledy mess. I know the developers have only got so much to work with but it really is bad.
If you're only in Manchester for a day give this place a miss, you'll only feel cheated of your time.

The Egypt section is impressive.
I also was amazed by the reptile exhibition. Surely a must if visiting Manchester.

“Great way to spend an afternoon - and it's free!”

Really good museum, interesting for all ages. We had such fun wandering round and learning. This is a place to be visited many times - there's so much to see and do.
