“Glad we booked a table and watched a great young band!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2014

Decided to visit Matt & Phred's after reading other reviews and we had a great evening.

Checkout their online diary of artists playing - very informative so you can research who you might want to see.

I rung to book a table for Saturday night when The Fresh Dixie Project were playing - a young band who I'd not heard of but looked on you tube etc to see if they were a band we'd like to see.

There is no charge to book a table but there is a £5 per person cover charge/entry fee. Well worth it - great vibe, reasonably priced drinks and clean toilets(!).

The staff are a little eager to sell you the food options - but as we had already eaten we had to pass on the delicious looking pizzas.

The band played 3 sets and the atmosphere was really great.

It's not a huge venue but felt very intimate and friendly.

Would definitely visit again!

“Swing when youre winning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

Was here a good year ago but the memories still linger of the good time had. We caught a cool band and some great lindy hop/ charleston demos while enjoying a pretty delicious pizza. Recommended. Wish we lived closer :(

“very good cosy, intimate club”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

The only club / bar of it's type in Manchester, I suppose the secret to a great night out here is to carefully select a band you know you are likely to enjoy, e.g. someone into modern, contemporary jazz would be / might be a little disappointed to find trad dixieland jazz being played and vice versa but Matt + Phred's website is very informative so you know exactly what to expect. Reasonably priced entrance, very friendly bar staff, the only thing I'd point out is perhaps they ought to leave an area in front of the stage for dancing ? Having said that, it was valentine's day when we visited so maybe that's why there were tables with diners all the way up to the stage ?

“Superb atmosphere, service & music heartily recommend!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

Arrived at 7ish just in time to avail myself of happy hour (always makes sense when you're buying a round!). So bought 8 cocktails for a mere £29! At weekends they do specials, however as I don't do spicy food (it was a chorizo stew) opted instead for olives and one of their pizza's which was thin crispy and just the way I liked it. Since I had two cocktails didn't have to buy a drink until settling back for the band that was on, they didn't start their first number until 9.40 and was surprised just how many of them there were!

Ordered a large glass of house white which hit the spot and lasted me until we all left.

Very attentive service from the team which was efficient but not over the top.

Would definitely return and recommend booking a table in advance (I did) whether a group of 7 as we were or just a couple of you. Book near the stage, your way from the hustle and bustle of the bar and the music is not too loud that it affect conversation.

My total bill for food was less than £20 and if you have something like a white Russian as a cocktail that can double as dessert....hic!
