“Nice overall, but a few niggling points”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

Just come back from a 2 night stay at these apartments for a weekend away with friends. The check in process was quick and simple, and we arrived a bit early so thought we'd chance it and see if an apartment was ready and it was, so we were able to check in early. The reception area is large, clean and modern and this translates into the apartments. We were very impressed by the decor in the apartment, it was modern and trendy and just what we were after. We on the 13th floor so we had a really good view over the city. In nice weather we definitely would have made more use of the balcony. Towels were nice, and the beds were comfy. Enough glasses, cutlery, plates etc. were provided. Next to the apartments is a Tesco express, the Arndale shopping centre is just up the road by the tram lines and so are lots of other shops/restaurants/banks. The Printworks for a few evening drinks is also just a short walk away.

There were a few things not quite right though. One lift wasn't working, and the other lift was either really quick or really slow. On check out we waited 10 minutes for a lift, it came a couple times but was full of people, so I ended up walking down 13 flights of stairs with a suitcase and still beat my friend who decided to wait for the lift. There is no radiator in the living room, which in summer wouldn't be a problem, but it was cold this weekend! There are also no blinds/curtains for the large glass doors to the balcony so there's no hope of keeping the cold out. In the bathroom the glass door wasn't very big and there was no shower curtain so there was more risk of getting the floor wet. One bedroom didn't have any plug sockets near a mirror, which isn't helpful when women are trying to get ready! There was no ironing board, but there was an iron. No draining board, but there is a washing machine - although with only a couple plates to wash I'd rather do them by hand. The walls could do with a new coat of paint because of scuffs, but it wasn't awful. Walls aren't super thick as we could hear music from another apartment at 02:30am. One sink was leaking but when I mentioned this to reception they had someone come up the next morning and fix it quickly, so that was good service.

These were nice apartments overall, but if they could just think of a few of these little things then they would be great apartments.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up, you might be waiting longer for a lift, but the view is worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to review us on Tripadvisor
I have read all you points with interest and i firstly thank you for kind praise of the hotel and your likes and your point of no ironing board will be addressed with housekeeping.
The aparthotel is currently undergoing a full refurbishment where apartments are being painted and decorated and issues such as not enough mirrors or in correct locations of them are being addressed.
As the showers are over bath style in the family bathrooms the area is part covered by a glass screen, this is of standard width and bath mats for when you exit are provided for your safety.
As with all our guests any issues you have when you stay please just let reception know, as you did with your sink and we are here to help.
Thank you for your overall positive feedback though and we hope to welcome you back to The Light

Kind Regards

I stayed here with two friends for a Christmas party we were going to. We booked an apartment so it would be easier to get ready and we stopped in one in the summer and they have far more space for a similar price, plus you have somewhere to put beer and wine and can cook your own breakfast in the morning. Very impressed with this one. Very pleasant reception staff on arrival, we were on the 14th floor the lift was really quick. We had an apartment for 4 so two double bedrooms both with flat screen tv's only one had a wardrobe but as we were only stopping one night this didn't matter. The kitchen was fully equipped with all appliances all Bosch, a spacious open plan living / dining kitchen area and quite a big balcony with a great view over the city. I will definitely be stopping here again. If I had an issue it would be that there was only one bathroom but this would not stop me coming back again

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your comments through Tripadvisor.
It was a pleasure to read that not only did you like the service you received but that you found the accomodation to be impressive.
Top tip for next time you visit is that if you do require more than one family bathroom, choose one of our executive apartments where you will also have an ensuite bathroom to the master bedroom too.
We look forward to welcoming you back

Stayed here for one night when visiting Manchester on business... Granted I took a late deal and only took the basic studio, so got the room pretty cheaply, but considering the prices they normally charge it's really not worth it. The room had everything you'd expect, but it wasn't a great standard... cutlery was mixed up, plates were dirty on arrival and the mattress was much smaller than the bed frame - though it was comfortable. Wi-Fi is slow, and the rooms are poorly soundproofed. Expect a degree of traffic noise as it's a city centre location, but where my apartment was close to the stairs so I spent the night being woken by doors banging and noisy groups going up the stairs.

Overall, it's an OK apartment in a great location. Staff were all very friendly, but for the basic rooms it's hugely overpriced and there are far better value places to be had in Manchester.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel away from the traffic noise and the street lights outside, a...

Thank you for your comments through Tripadvisor.
I was sorry to read that you felt the studio apartment was not to your liking.
Our prices are always based at a competitive rate in line with other properties of a similar standard.
There are 5 studio apartments located on the first floor and all are supplied with complimentary WIFI access, now that we are aware that you had an issue with this service we will of course look into why and if there is something we can do to resolve.
We feel that our accomodation and particularily our studio apartments are great value for money as where else do you get the feel of a hotel room but with Kitchen facilities for the same price as just a standard hotel room.

We do hope you that you stay with us again and possibly sample some of or many other apartment types, we have here at The Light

4 of us stayed there in a 2 bedroom apartment, and the view from the room is simply stunning, overlooking the skyline of Manchester. The rooms are reasonably equipped, but we love the washing machine and dryer in the common area, which works miracles to our clothes. The beds are really comfy and the carpeted floor in the room makes it extremely cosy. The location is extremely convenient for us, as it is right behind Arndale. The only two things we were dissatisfied were 1) no housekeeping 2) parking the car in the basement carpark is a nightmare.

Room Tip: If you drive, don't choose this hotel. If you are expecting daily cleaning, please make it a po...

Thank you for your feedback through Tripadvisor.
I was thrilled to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you liked the hotel and our stunning views.
As with the concept of aparthotels daily servicing of the rooms is not a feature of them, we do however provide the apartments with handheld hoovers etc for light servicing needed. After 4 days a towel change is provided and a light service and every week full linen, towel changes are done and the apartments serviced by our housekeeping team.
If you do require daily cleaning this can be conducted at an extra charge.
Our underground, secure car park could be classed as being compact but as is with most city centre parking not unusual and is negotiable by car but we do not have the height facility to accomodate vans etc

We hope to welcome you back soon

The Indian-English manager at the reception was horrible: We had a complaint, the junior front office manager offered a small compensation (garage for free), but the General Manager insisted that the hotel could never do this.....! Who could please teach this man that running a hotel is a people business and that clients that have a serious complaint (non working elevators and problems with the plumbing) should not be treated like idiots!

Thank you for your comments placed through Tripadvisor.
I noticed on the posting that you stayed with us last year in February.
Just so you are aware, since you last stayed there has been a whole new team installed here at The Light.
The GM when you stayed was a lady and i am not entirely sure who the other members you refered to were but i think you would find by reading more recent comments that what you experienced and the way you describe it being handled is certainly not the approach we have and definately not the results we aim to have our guests experience.
I am positive that were you to stay again, not only have we undergone and are working toward our refurbishment but the whole, new team, pre-empt and resolve any dis satisfaction in a totally more customer focused way.

We would of course like to welcome you back at any time to see these changes and to then feedback your more recent stay an the positive results you find.

Kind Regards

lovely hotel/apartment, we booked prior to going on holiday flying from manchester airport.
we booked a 2 bedroom apartment for 4 of us,
nicest thing about the whole room was the bedroom area really comfy beds.

the room had a balcony which would be very useful in the summer, because we stayed in december we could use it to full potential.

The only negative would be because there was 4 of there was only 1 sofa which could get 2 people on, there was dining table and chairs but you can hardly relax on dining chairs.

would i stay here again yes, and if you get a good deal i would recomend to.

staff were very friendly swell, nothing didnt seem to much trouble for storing our cases etc

Thank you for your comments placed hrough Tripadvisor.
It was lovely to read your feedback and that you enjoyed your stay at the hotel and that you would be staying with us again.
We will take on board your feedback in relation to the seating area, some apartments have larger lounges than others, which obviously space dictating can hold more furniture and does.
If we can at all help when you stay again with any requests, please do not hesitate to contact us.
