Booked for a night's stay in Manchester for family of 5. Used central reservations (online chat) and was assured that a) the room would be a fixed price for a family of 5, and b) would include full English breakfast. On arrival at the hotel, we were told that it had only been booked for 1 adult, and that I'd made a mistake (how stupid would I be to book a family room for one adult then turn up with two adults and three children? Unlikely.....), that we would have to pay extra (£29) for each child, and that there might not be a rollaway bed available to put in the room. So our "fixed price" bed and breakfast room turned out to be room only, £100 more expensive, without full English breakfast as promised (although continental breakfast was included, however we had been told that it would include full English, so that's what we were expecting).
On querying this, the attitude of the receptionist was not apologetic at all, in fact, her reply was "don't book anything through central reservations, they're hopeless". In the end, the hotel decided that we wouldn't have to pay for the children but would have to pay extra for breakfast. We felt that we were being blamed for the problem, and the receptionist told us that they could check the online chat as all chats are recorded, as if we weren't telling the truth. I'm completely happy for the online chat to be checked.
The hotel itself was ok, pretty standard fare for hotels of this ilk (Marriott, Hilton etc). Reasonably clean and rooms were spacious, although there weren't enough towels in the room and the bed was sunken in the middle, leading to that awkward "roll together" all night, which is uncomfortable. The club lounge was a nice touch and the continental breakfast was excellent. Apparently they do canapés/drinks in the evening too and there's a tv in there, with some board games and books which is a nice touch if you're spending any length of time in the hotel.
There's no on site parking and the ncp car park over the road is extortionate, but there's definitely cheaper parking in the vicinity if you want to walk a bit further. It's a walk into the centre of the action and it's not in the most salubrious part of the city but overall the position is ok, near to the Arndale centre.
In conclusion, if you get a cheap deal, then this hotel is fine. IMO the rooms aren't worth £150/night room only, which is what we paid. Service and customer relations is a bit lacking, but hotel ok. Just don't go through central reservations!
