My partner and I were looking for somewhere cheap to "get our head down" for one night as we were seeing Muse at the Etihad Stadium.
A search for hotels was proving a potentially expensive exercise until I spotted this place.
We figured as we were just stopping, we were not really too fussy about the room and facilities/looks etc - until we arrived at Manchester. The drive to the hotel took us through some less than salubrious areas, and expectations were low. However, when we arrived where the sat nav suggested was our destination we were pleasantly surprised.
The building is charming, and is generally well maintained - bearing in mind it's more than just a guest house/hotel.
The receptionist was very friendly, very helpful and checked us in using a simple card/index system. Free WiFi codes provided and we headed to our room.
We walked through the charming little courtyard, past the library and up to the room.
There is a slight aroma of fustiness and cheap cleaning product up the stairs - which you take take one of two ways. It was tired, yes, but generally clean. It would be impossible to get this building to the standard of the new monolithic pop-up hotels without a complete (and expensive) refurbishment.
The room was basic, but had a vanity unit and (much to my partner's relief) we had our own shower and toilet. Again, both basic, but functional.
Given what we'd paid for the room, and the location and proximity to Manchester City Centre (a short bus journey away, with bus stops at the end of the road), we were pleasantly surprised.
Parking can be a bit tight - as we found out, but it's a nice little site.
