What a find!
We were looking for a Sunday night away and came across this hotel on the Internet. The rate we were offered was good so we anticipated being placed in one of the smaller/lesser rooms in the hotel something we have experienced before at other establishments.
Chipping Camden is delightful, a typical Cotswold village, the sort of place loved by foreign visitors. The wide High Street consists of individual shops and houses built of local stone. The Noel Arms hotel is situated in the middle of the High Street with limited parking available at the rear of the hotel (accessed via an archway on the left hand side of the hotel) and a pay and display car park situated in the centre of the High Street. Our first impressions were very favourable. The hotel was warm (it was a very cold day) with fires lit in the main public areas and busy which is always a good sign especially at 4.30 on a Sunday afternoon.
Arriving at reception our welcome was extremely pleasant, professional and efficient. The member of staff, whose name I sadly did not catch, is a credit to the hotel. We were welcomed as though we were frequently returning guests and taken through the check-in procedure with a minimum of fuss. Also interest was taken in what had brought us to the area. The receptionist then took us to our bedroom via the lounge, bar and restaurant explaining the opening hours of each and where food could be eaten. Being shown to your room is a rarity nowadays, and made a welcome change.
The Noel Arms is a building of historic interest; so do not expect the usual modern layout of hotel bedrooms behind the public rooms. We need not have worried about being placed in a lesser room ours was extremely pleasant. A good size, it overlooked the rear of the hotel, was spotlessly clean and had all the usual amenities expected these days including an electric trouser press and hostess tray. The receptionist noticed that the radiator was turned off and immediately switched it on. We hadn't noticed the problem and ten minutes later we were turning it down, as the room was too hot! The very comfortable bed not only had a continental quilt but a full size quilted throw in case guests needed additional warmth. The bathroom had an over bath shower with a glass shower screen, not the dreaded curtain! Again it was spotlessly clean.
On arrival we had noticed a cafe bar in the foyer and decided to go there for a coffee and cake before walking around the town. As we arrived it was obvious the two young baristas were closing for the day however they willingly made us two coffees and warmed a scone through. Expecting only a plain scone with butter it arrived with both clotted cream and jam, my husband was delighted!
After a stroll around the town we returned to our room to have a shower before going to the bar for an evening drink. The shower was powerful with plenty of hot water. Unfortunately we had eaten an indifferent Sunday lunch on our way to Chipping Camden, if only we hadn’t. The menu, served anywhere in the hotel, was interesting and appeared good value. Free WiFi is available in the hotel but I had experienced problems logging on to it. The bar staff and receptionist went out of their way to solve the problem, rebooting the system twice and using a staff member’s iphone to test the WiFi as I was using an ipad. Their efforts were successful and much appreciated.
Our rate included breakfast. There was a range of fruit juices, fresh fruit, yogurts, cereals, toast and rolls available as well as a variety of cooked options. We ordered porridge; this was freshly made and very good, the portion was huge, we were unable to eat it all.
In our opinion it is the staff that make this hotel stand out from others and why we will definitely return. They are pleasant and personable to guests; they work as a team and appear willing to help guests and each other out. Their professionalism and helpful, courteous manner added to our stay. We had a wonderful stay and left wishing it had been longer.
