“Good quality food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

I recently went as part of large group and had a lovely meal, pre-ordered prior to going which was probably not my ideal choice, but as going as part of large group was probably much better planning for the restaurant. Meal was quite good, quite large portions and a nice choice of courses. I would go back again and pick from the menu on the night. Highly recommended.

“Service severely lacking and main course bland and undercooked”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

We booked for Sunday lunch at 12 noon. When we arrived as 11.55 there was no one one in the restaurant and it took a while to find someone who took our drinks order but said she didn't normally "do" drinks. We asked for an Appletise and she came back with an apple juice without an apology or explanation. She was in her 70's and we felt sorry for her so didn't say anything. The restaurant was very cold despite it being sunny outside and they had left the large front door open. There was another waitress there who also appeared to be in her 70's who had a very unfortunate manner of getting in your personal space when speaking. Neither waitress knew what type of pie or soup of the day was and had to ask. As it was a Sunday we got a set menu and a specials
menu. Every table got a crusty warmish roll each and a rock solid knob of butter that was impossible to spread onto these cheap rolls. They were like the ones you warm yourself in the oven. Bear in mind if you want some of the specials you have to pay extra and get a small portion. We both had scallops to start with and they were very tasty but you only get three. Be aware that because it is a Sunday all the main courses come with the same potatoes and veg that get served with the roast meats so you get mash, roast potatoes and veg which we couldn't eat as they were barely cooked! We also got a weird cabbage dish that came in a watery sauce with some barely cooked bacon. I had a pork escalope that was supposed to be cooked with Parmesan according to the menu. When it arrived it was definitely not Parmesan more like the cheapest mildest cheddar. The whole dish was as bland as bland can be. I ended up leaving a large part of it. The chicken pie was very nice though. When we came to leave we asked for the bill, everyone kept ignoring us when we wanted to ask for the card machine. Three waitresses were standing in the room looking at us and they could clearly tell we wanted something but they just stood around talking. In the end we got up and took the bill to the front desk to pay. We said to the lady on the desk "do only some of your waitresses know how to take payment" and all she said was "yes"! It totally went over her head and said that most people come to the desk to pay. I am sure only because the waitresses do not have a clue as to what good service is. Incidentally bear in mind it will cost you £5 to park in a nearby car park to eat at this establishment!

“Excellent cheese board”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

Not just an excellent cheese board! The whole evening was a success with tasty food, excellent service, in a lovely surrounding. We are looking forward to our next visit, it is sometime since we have come out of a restaurant and thought wow we need to go back soon.
