This is an excellent hotel for a budget business traveller. For a shade over £50 per night you get a good sized double bed in a clean and comfortable room with a very good shower. I agree with others that some of the fixtures and fittings are getting a tad weary but really nothing to complain about. The lighting in the bedroom could be improved - either quite stark or too dark - but otherwise good value.
The breakfast is first class: the fry-up is generous, non-greasy and fresh; perfect poached eggs on request. The restaurant and bar menus are really impressive and quite delicious food freshly prepared, all at very reasonable prices. I would imagine that even non guests would visit as the quality of the food is such that it could operate as a stand alone enterprise quite happily. Bit sneaky, though, in not serving a salad with the risotto as advertised unless the customer complains about its absence. The same waitress feigned surprise that it accompanied the dish on the two separate occasions that I ordered the (delicious) risotto!! All a bit disingenuous and not something that the extremely friendly, helpful, genuinely attentive and highly professional owner, Simon, would approve of I'm sure.
On the whole, just like the boss, the staff were very helpful and courteous though just a couple of the younger staff were a little surly and let the side down a bit. 5 nights last week to be followed by another couple this: return custom is a pretty good barometer and on that basis I would say: overall, a very good hotel that I will certainly use again when in or near the area. Strongly recommended.
