“A comfy stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW

We had a choice of the Royal Kings Arms or the Travelodge and I think we made the right choice. Yes it is a bit tired looking and shabby, but I had an excellent nights sleep in a huge room. It is well placed close to the train station and town centre.

We walked up and got a room with no reservations. The reception was good and was happy to cut us a bit of a deal as we were getting a family room for two. If your looking for a 5* move on. This is a tired old hotel that has charm and character. We simply found nothing really wrong with it. It has a small creaky old cage elevator big staircase and given the right room a Birdseye view of the castle. no other hotel in Lancaster can boast this. Lots of clean towels fast wifi and a comfy bed. It has one other thing in its favour. If you didn't know it Lancaster is a pub town. There are at a minimum 27 pubs in a half mile radius of the hotel. We only stayed one night but we're quite content. Oh the breakfast is pretty good too.

Firstly ignore the pictures of the hotel rooms on the website because believe me it isn't the same place! We were just staying the one night as we decided last minute to explore Lancaster, the hotel itself is very dated which does give it a quirky look however the rooms are not to be desired, small, damp smelling and in desperate need of a bob or two spending on them, the bed was quite possibly the worst bed I have ever slept in with pillows like cardboard boxes and mattress springs that dig your ribs all night, in the bathroom the bin had a used sanitary towel in it so obviously the bin had not been emptied since it was previously occupied, the window in the room had been damaged so wouldn't open had a big crack down the middle and could of done with being cleaned! With the hotel being in a central location the noise was unbearable and may have been eased with some conventional double glazed windows. Indeed we will not be staying at this hotel again and will most likely be occupying a travelodge next time!

In needs of TV, the whole establishment is very dated, rooms are clean, but, can smell musty, not enough sockets and are in the wrong place, my last room had a hole in the wall from the front door , when opening, the handle hits it, toilet roo holder fell of the wall, despite, looking at previous repairs, had be re positioned at least 3 times.
It is not all dom and gloom, staff are friendly and helpful, the hotel is centrally locate to the city centre and most pubs and rester aunts, and for a £5th off length of stay fee you can use the hotel's car park, ample parking space in an area of the city where space is a premium.

I wasn't expecting much...very cheap room mid week stay. The room was awful, shabby decor, lumpy mattress but clean....ish. The breakfast area was in better shape and food was fine. You get what you pay for....but I think in future I would pay an extra £15 for top class service elsewhere.

Having stayed at the Kings Arms last year I had no hesitation in rebooking for a school reunion. The hotel has had some refurbishment since I last stayed and whilst there is still some way to go with the refurbishment programme, the hotel appears to be improving its appearance. Location couldn't be better, the room was very clean and tidy and there was a nice touch with complimentary toiletries, something you don't get in most establishments apart from the very pricey ones! The breakfast was again exceptional. Freshly cooked to order and plentiful, with good quality ingredients. The staff at breakfast were very attentive, pleasant, polite and very efficient. All in all great value for money, great location, great staff, I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are quieter

Location amazing and staff very friendly The bedroom had everything we needed with good lighting. The dining room is huge and there were lovely white table cloths on the table at breakfast as well as fresh flowers. We very much enjoyed our stay.
