Owner description: Owned by the serving monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II, through the Duchy of Lancaster, Lancaster Castle is a wealth of English history. Since being established by the Romans the castle has been a home to monarchs, a place of trial and execution, and a working prison right up until 2012. Still a crown court, the majority of the castle is now open to the public for the first time in over 1,000 years. Since its opening in 2013, the Castle is gradually developing its offer of tours and events, as well as offering a cafe and gift shop in the grounds.

“I can't believe that was still in use so recently as a prison”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

We went on a guided tour of the castle and really got our money's work, the. The guide was knowledgable and entertaining. I know know where the term take them down comes from. The dungeon experience was enlightening. The recently opened prison was an eye opener.

“Very informative and interesting”

We had a guided tour of the castle. The guide was very well informed and made the tour really interesting - his knowledge of the castle was second to none. Thank you

“Interesting Tour - but don't go if limited mobility or wheelchair user”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

My daughter and I went here for the Justice Tour. However, this wasn't available so we did the usual tour. As usual, I write from the perspective of two people who have limited mobility.

First the negatives: The castle is at the top of the hill which is what you might expect however the footpath up to the castle entrance is a death-trap. It is old fashioned cobbled which are aesthetically marvellous. But these are not maintained and are treacherous to walk on. Particularly with being on a very steep entrance to the castle. There isn't a walkway or safe path to walk on to the entrance and we found that getting in and out of the castle more frightening than anything that we saw, heard or learnt in our tour.

We were told that the castle is owned by the Queen as the Duke of Lancaster but the other Royal Houses tourist attractions are beautifully kept and safe. There is no sense of safety in the castle entrance or grounds.

In the old laundry room we had to step down from the more modern part of the room to the older part of the room however there is nowhere to step as the differentials in the levels are due to the newer part of the floor being hacked out and you have to step down what is effectively the remains of a building site which is uneven and again, treacherous.

The positives: The tour was well conducted by a person called Gregory who was very interesting,

The tea room was very reasonably priced but the shop did not have anything that was relevant to the history or information about the castle.

Nevertheless we enjoyed the afternoon which was helped by the beautiful weather but all in all this is the most unsafe tourist attraction we have ever seen. We would love to go back to do the Justice tour but would not be able to navigate the hazardous entrance to the castle again. Although we mentioned the lack of safety to the Security Guard on the entrance, he seemed resigned to the condition of the entrance and we were not offered an alternative entrance.

“MURDER MYSTERY SCARE ON A WING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2014

Wow! This was a night to remember! This was a fund raiser for the admirable St John Hospice and its enthusiastic staff. We were treated to history first hand here in wonderful Lancaster. I hope the prison stays intact as an attraction- it is certainly different. We were entertained by the unequalled fabulous After Dark who never disappoint- lets have more of them at the castle- it would be well worth coming along, it is so unique. We had a great mystery with scares and thrills alike all set in the original surroundings of the prison. We were put in cells as part of the fund raiser had a laugh as our fellow inmate Lee was hilarious ! Thanks Carol too. We had lovely food from the fabulous NICE who have a café in the Castle. We had ghost stories from the entertaining Tony who had worked in the prison and had amazing tales to tell- please keep him on tours with him would be great! It was a worth while experience we raised money for a great cause and had a unique experience- Come on organisers- lets have more castle experiences with After Dark!
