I have eaten at this restaurant on three occasions recently during two visits to Lancaster and can honestly say it is incredible and easily my favourite Indian restaurant. When you step off the street and into the entrance corridor you can be easily confused which door actually leads into the restaurant as there is no sign on or over the door (it is the first on the right by the way), but once inside you are greeted with a small, smart, clean, well laid-out room that has a welcoming almost living room feel to it. A large party can easily dominate the area but do not be put off as you are in for a gastronomic treat!
It is worth noting that Moghuls is not licensed so be prepared to forego the Cobra or Kingfisher with your Vindaloo and plump for a delicious Lassi instead. The establishment offers jugs of some drinks which is a good idea for a party of 4 or more. Also worthy of note is that the portions are large so you may wish to opt out of either the poppadoms or starters to make sure you have enough room!
Moghuls offer a "happy hour" which currently runs until 7:30pm. This offer is £5 for one of the "golden oldies" or "old faithful" curries with either pilau rice or a nan bread or 2 chapattis. This limited selection of food covers the most popular dishes and is well worth going out early for.
From certain seats in the restaurant it is easily possible to look into the tiny kitchen and see the food being prepared. There is no door between the two rooms and so it makes a change to see that the staff has nothing to hide. It also helps you to appreciate why you may have to wait a little while to be served during busier times, as the tiny kitchen seems to be overflowing with chefs! If this happens to you then be patient as the authentic Indian food is definitely worth waiting for.
The menu offers most of the dishes you expect to see and some that you do not. The flavours and balance of the spices is just perfect and for those wanting something with a kick then just ask. My friend generally eats Vindaloo or Phal and was impressed with the Vindaloo offering from Moghuls and described it as "not as hot as some restaurants but there is a lot more flavour than usual".
Personally I have tried the Dalsak, Tikka Masalla and an Achari dish and all were phenomenal.
So to sum up, the service is good but can sometimes be a bit slow, the restaurant is not licensed, the food is amazing, the portions large and the price surprisingly good value. 5 stars from me!
Highly recommended and definitely worth a visit.
