This restaurant was recommended to me by a few friends who like good food. And I cannot deny that the food was decent. We had chosen a beef bourguignon, the chicken dish, the lamb cut and the fish (mulet). All dishes were well presented and came in good proportions and accompaniments (vegetables and some form of potatoes). We did not wait for too long, although the restaurant was not very busy that night. What really disappointed me was the lack of 'Frenchness' to the menu and the actual eating. A quintessential component of a meal is bread, yet the staff insisted on taking the bread away as soon as the starters were served. Half of the menu is aimed at English customers and has nothing French to it (scrambled eggs for breakfast, full English breakfast, mackerel pate, grilled cheese, lamb shoulder with minty peas, burger, the bavarois dessert - never heard of it before, the cherry tart - a hidden Bakewell tart, and so on). The cheese platter was the only offer that was actually French, although it came with crackers and celery and jam instead of bread!!!
The service was good, and apart from the occasional lack of understanding of what we were trying to order (tried giving names of the dishes from the menu with a real French accent), we were well taken care of. The premises are decent too. A lot of decoration which can be found anywhere, but it was nice to see some fake 'retro' items. The second big disappointment was the dirty bathroom and filthy toilet which was completely blocked. This unfortunately can happen, but no effort was made to warn customers and to clean around it. It was repulsing.
The location of the restaurant is in a fairly quiet street not far away from the heart of the town. Parking is available on the street and there is a full car park a couple of blocks away. There is a terrace which must be enjoyable when the weather is appropriate.
Overall, I was really disappointed. The prices were high for dishes that can be often found in similar shapes in pubs and even the wine menu was disappointing and very expensive. The staff and the location of the restaurant were acceptable, but I would not recommend this place. There are other French restaurants in Leamington that deserve more attention.
