The first look at the outside leaves you wondering but don't worry. It's old but well kept and the rooms are as spacious as anything we found in England. The staff rates somewhere well above AAA. Nothing is too much trouble, even putting a second sheet on the bed (Canadian style) when we asked rather than just one sheet (British style). They're all ready to offer suggestions rather than waiting for you to ask and it seems rules can be well bent to accomodate the guests. The dining room is nicely decorated and the menu is more than adequate and very well presented. The location is excellent. 2 minute walk to the Records Office for the geneology buffs, 5 minute walk to the train station and main shopping area and about 15 minute walk to the coach station and all this for much less than we would have paid in other places we checked. Would we stay there again? You bet! In a heartbeat!!

My partner and I stayed at the Ashwood Hotel for a couple of nights this year before heading off to Inverness. We were extremely happy with the accommodation and the staff were very friendly. The hotel was in a great spot to visit the records office to do some family history research, as well as being very convenient to the shopping centre and restaurants (we recommend a small place called Tottos).

This hotel delivered more than we expected for the 51 pounds a night B&B for a twin room.
The decor was of excellent standard generally, our room was very pleasant, with a large clean bathroom. Two large towels each were provided. Tea and coffee making facility. Thoughtfully put together guide to Preston in the room.
The hotel staff were friendly, and the breakfast was high quality.
Convenient for the centre of Preston, with some parking at the front.
Would certainly stay there again.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2006

I booked this hotel on a Thursday afternoon due to arrive Sunday and was quoted £68. I would be booked into a en-suite on night and a shared bathroom the next. The prices on their website quote £34 a night for single en-suite and £39 for a double ensuite if occupied singularly.

As I requested a single only based on the fact my sponsoring agency want you to book the cheapest rooms prices I was expecting to pay £68 in total maximum.

However on arrival I was switched into a double ensuite and charged £39 a night each. I didnt realise this till the receptionist (which I never knew was supposed to be the manageress or a stand-in for a manager or the manageress as she always spoke of someone called Diane she had to ask but was never there-at least I never saw this other person).

I asked if it was possible to switch me back to the single ensuite at £34 explaining the position but it was waylaid untill the day after by which time I abandoned trying to switch rooms and thought what the hell-stay in that room-admittedly it was a pleasant room-and the facilities a kettle tea/coffee etc was in plenty,a very nicely maintained bathroom.

The only begrudgement is I feel aggrieved that they charge double occupancy rates when they run out of single ensuites. If they can't supply the rooms its a bit off to charge more based on only whats available.

The front of the hotel is very pleasant and tidy and room for about 6 cars to park-if you dare risk the potential damage as there appears to be next door a hostel or B&B taking in only homeless teenagers and further up the road the same. These usually are about hidden in the hedges or swinging off gateposts of adjoining properties.

breakfasts are pleasant enough anyway.

the rear of the property backs onto anb unkempt garden and what i can only describe as lots of falling off guttering and holes in the building near the loft/fascias that are filled with copious amounts of that bright orange aerosol foam filling stuff to keep the pidgeons out.prepare for a dawn chorus of coo-ing and the screeching of passing freight trains atabout 5.30 am in the back area.

All in all ok for a few nights stayover.

pleasant enough 8 out of 10.
