I'm a fairly keen birder and was a little put off by the glossy, family amenity image of this reserve. However I found it a pleasant, diverse green space with a geniune range of habitats and more Goldeneye than I've ever seen before in one place, and a range of bird life to rival any of the smaller local reserves or some of the larger ones around London. It's a particularly attractive place to wander, with a distinct romance about it. The visitors centre is largely dedicated to the commercial interests of the trust and could do with a bit more "quality" wildlife information. It could also do with new hides, the existing ones having suffered from the wear and tear typical of a green oasis on the urban periphery. Perhaps shipping container based hides would be a good idea for the management to consider. The Tree Sparrows were a very pleasant surprise, as were the Goldeneye and the abundant Shoveller and other waterfowl. For free and just off the M6, it should be on the list of anyone with an interest in wildlife living in Lancashire.
