“Efficient and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2014 via mobile

Stayed here on business for a few nights. Hadn't stayed for ages. However I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel still seems clean and modern. The room was pleasant and breakfast was good. Comfortable bed and pillows. All good.

My colleagues and I stayed at the hotel last night, to attend a meeting in one of the conference suites today
I usually 'get by' with hotel food whilst on the road. The evening meal was brilliant and the accommodation for the overnight stay was delightful.
Aika was there to check me in and cater for a few requests I had made. Very impressed with the service...
I'm sure to visit again soon

Bargain room on a Saturday night. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast above average for this sort of property. Room pretty basic and somewhat worn, more like a cheap B&B in terms of decor, bathroom facilities and tea/coffee arrangement. Only real criticism - if you must offer a choice of pillows why give the hardest by default? But all in all pretty good for the price.

Stayed Monday night with wife and very impressed with all. Great room, staff were very helpful and polite. Right smack bang in centre of Solihull so local bars, restaurants, cinema etc across road if needed.

Room was great and a good night sleep in very comfortable bed.

Enjoyed the stay.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn for 1 night during a recent visit to Birmingham. The location of the hotel is very good, being opposite Touchwood Shopping Precinct and several bars/ restaurants as well as being a 20 -30 minute drive to Birmingham City Centre.
Staff was very professional and helpful - in particular Chloe at reception whose friendliness and helpfulness set the tone for the rest of our stay.
The lounge area by the fireplace provides a lovely setting for pre/ post dinner drinks.
The room itself was a bit outdated and the bathroom wasn't very practical - Nevertheless it was still comfortable enough for our short stay.
Overall, a very pleasant experience and we will most likely stay at this property again during our next visit to Birmingham.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

The Holiday Inn Solihull is a large modern hotel with a large number of corporate and event spaces/suites/rooms. It is close the business and shopping facilities of Solihull, we chose to stay there because the Touchwood Shopping Centre and centre of Solihull being just across the street from the hotel. Also the hotel has inhouse leisure facilities of gym/fitness and small swimming pool.

Booking was very easy online and a smooth minimal process on arriving.

The rooms are large, bedding is good quality with a choice of pillows available. The heating is regulated within each room by way of radiator controls, air conditioning was apparent for the summer months. The radiator was switched off in our room, we were happy with this as we prefer sleeping in a cooler room. However the whole heating system appeared to switch on around 6am each day causing clanging, banging, knocking, that woke us.

The general fixtures and fittings of the hotel bedrooms and bathrooms was disappointing, our towel rail was broken, as was the toilet lid, the wooden threshold between the bedroom and bathroom wasn't fixed down, the bath panels are painted hardboard; this was an executive room.

The positioning of the hotel is good for being able to access the shopping centre, I.e. Across the street, but unfortunately this also means that the noise level from the various bars and restaurants in the Touchwood Centre goes on into the night and we were surprised to have booming bass music come in waves of sound when trying to sleep - if the windows were double glazed the sound would probably not be intrusive.

The breakfast was an adequate self service buffet, couldn't find any porridge although I did not ask for it and would prefer to have hot water delivered to table and be able to choose tea bags and a better quality brand would have been better, more true to flavour.

We ate in the hotel restaurant Friday and Saturday night and were surprised to be the only occupied table on the Friday. The food was good but what became evident once having visited the centre of Solihull is the hotel is competing with a large number of easily accessible local eateries that offer various food types and most at lower prices to the hotel. Even the hotel's offer of 2 course meal with a glass of wine for two at £29 did not match the options available locally, especially as the hotels menu was limited and even more limited if the 'offer' deal was chosen, especially if you are a vegetarian.

Having said that the food we had was generally cooked and presented well and if you want to be able to hear and talk to your friends then paying more to eat here is probably worth it. However do not choose the Strawberry and Raspberry Eton mess for desert, it is made with tinned fruit with maybe one tiny piece of meringue and tinned whipped cream, awful.

What made our stay pleasant was the friendliness, professional courteous staff who were keen to help and assist. We would return, but only if a room to the rear of the hotel was available.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not at the front. There is a £5 a day parking fee added to your bill per car.
