I booked this hotel partially based on a recommendation, partially because it has its own car park and also because of its proximity to the Palace Theatre in Watford.
Staff are polite, public areas bright and welcoming, reasonable rates.
As soon as you step outside the public areas and into the lobby where the lift is located it becomes apparent that this is an old hotel that's been taken over by Park Inns and partially renovated. Very slow, tiny lift (just the one), dark, dismal corridors.
I'm assuming (given the layout of the hotel) that most rooms are the same size (certainly the open rooms I walked past are the same size as mine was) ... compact is the word I used to describe the room to a friend that was joining me ... barely room to move around and I think if I'd been inclined to use the ironing board and iron (something not often found in budget hotel rooms without asking) I'd have been hard pushed to find somewhere to actually stand it!
The bathroom had a tiny sink and very little room to put toiletries but there was a large walk-in shower cubicle with a powerful shower. Large, white good quality towels - again, unusual for a budget hotel.
The decor in the room was very cheap - plastic lampshades, strange lighting scheme. Individual aircon unit that tended to be a little noisy. Old flat screen TV with a reasonable picture but poor remote control.
Two twin beds - narrow, not fit for a 6'3" person, duvet too narrow for the bed so kept sliding off, pillows made of hard foam ... not a good night's sleep I'm afraid!
Kettle, mugs, two teabags, two sugar packs ... why do hotels provide such minimal quantities - what happens if two people both take sugar in tea and don't want to use brown sugar or sweeteners? What happens if two people want a cup of tea in the evening and another in the morning?!
Breakfast - a good selection of food, but the quality was not great - the bacon was poor quality, fried eggs were over cooked, all the 'hot' food was lukewarm, croissants were the usual cheap variety found in hotels - fruit juices were good and there were crusty loaves to be hand sliced for toast if wanted. Coffee machine ... I selected a latte, tasted it and wondered if it had actually got any coffee in it ... got a cup, selected espresso on the machine, tipped it into my latte ... and it still didn't taste of coffee ...!!
Web site states bar is open to 1.00am - in-room literature states bar is open to midnight - reception and bar staff advise that bar is only open until 11.00pm! After discussing this with reception, who kindly spoke to the Restaurant Manager, arrangements were made for the bar to stay open until midnight given that we had around six rooms booked between our party.
All in all I wouldn't use a Park Inn again if this is the overall standard one can expect.
