“Nice Hotel, friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2014

We stayed here for one night only but the reception staff were lovely, incredibly friendly and really helpful.

Nice spacious room, clean, lovely bathroom, all usual amenities. Remote control to TV didn't work and shaver socket was loose in bathroom. The receptionist seemed really embarrassed when we told her but we were just bringing it to their attention, not complaining.

Great breakfast with amazing variety of continental foods. Service a little slow, but again very courteous.

Would stay here again if in the area,

Arrived very late at night and only spent 5 hours there but the room was clean, towels were great and it had all the amenities in the room you might expect. Ok it is not a five star hotel but there was all I needed just to put my head down. The hotel is described as having character............... so that explains the creaking floor boards! Staff very friendly.

Stayed here on Saturday for one night as we were going to a christening at a nearby church. Monica who greeted us at reception was absolutely delightful throughout our stay. Very friendly and helpful and a delight to talk to. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and Kristine and Dace who were on duty were lovely. Very attentive and friendly. The food was extremely good and the breakfast was equally as good with a wide range of choices. We went back to the hotel in the afternoon as the christening lunch was held there and again the food was excellent. The gardens of the hotel are very pretty and the hotel itself is nicely presented. The only slight drawback is that there is no elevator so you would have to ask for a room on the ground floor if you have a problem with stairs. Our bedroom was a good size with a large comfy bed.. Would certainly stay here again.

We booked this venue at very short notice because of health reasons and from my first telephone conversation with Sara Winter I knew I had made the right choice. The arrangements were very easy to make with quick responses from Sara. Choice of room and menu were perfect for our guests and the room looked delightful when we arrived. All our guests enjoyed their meals which were served courteously and efficiently. In terms of price we felt it was good value for money and family and friends would consider using the venue again in the future.

Spacious room with good facilities and comfortable bed, however, duvet cover was split open allowing a dirty, very old looking duvet to spill out of the seam. Shower very troublesome (air lock) but staff very helpful and attentive and finally after 30 mins of trying between us we eventually got hot water. Our room was situated over the entrance to the hotel and lots of people noise, fighting, swearing and breaking glass heard around midnight, which woke us from our sleep. (sounded like a domestic) Reception staff very helpful and hotel close to town centre. Would we stay here again maybe if in a different part of the hotel.

Due to another hotel refusing to honor a booking because they had made an error in the room price we had to select a hotel at one days notice. Fortunately we discovered this gem. Quiet surroundings, extremely helpful staff, reasonably priced, good food in the restaurant and a full English breakfast individually cooked for you. The room was small but not cramped, light and airy. My partner found the bed slightly on the soft side but that was the only thing we could mark down this hotel on. All in all an agreeable night.

First impression of the Russell Hotel was good...it's a grand building in some very pretty grounds, and I received a big smiling welcome at reception. My room was on the first floor (for any Americans reading the review that's one floor up from the ground level!). I was told there was no lift / elevator - not a problem for me but something that those with mobility issues may find very important to know before booking.

The room was of a decent size, but was quite warm - the radiator was off and there was no aircon, so not really sure why it was so warm, but warm it was. I was staying in the area on business, so was pleased to find free Wi-Fi (and very good strength signal) and free car parking too, with 80 spaces for guests. The hotel is in a nice location, 10 minutes drive from the motorway and 20 minutes walk from the centre of town. Work area was a little cramped in the room but I have stayed in far worse rooms. Shower in the bathroom was a little stiff, and required a bit of force to turn it on and off.

Breakfast was good and cooked to order - I had a selection of fruit and yoghurt from the cold buffet area and then had kippers - tasty and a good size.

Overall a pleasant staff, friendly staff and the hotel and grounds are very pretty. Lack of a lift will be a big problem for some visitors though. Would happily stay there again.

Room Tip: For those with mobility issues, ask for a ground floor room - there is no lift!
