Having had very mixed experiences with Pizza Express, both good and bad, this one in the Xscape centre looked rather swish. So we entered, voucher at the ready, hoping it would be a good one. The staff were a few long moments having a good laugh and chat before they noticed us waiting. I was just about to storm off, but then we were suddenly greeted and with gusto. However, we were led to a table beneath a raging air conditioner vent, blowing a cold gale down upon us... In the middle of October!!!! I asked if we could be moved, and we were, though our new table wasn't much cosier. I still shivered beneath a draught. As the meal went on, I noticed staff wafting themselves with menus, hot as they hovered round the kitchen? Had they demanded the air conditioning as winter loomed? Well, it's not pleasant to sit and eat in.
That aside, staff were smart and bright. The decor here is modern and swish. Everything was immaculate and bright. Our voucher allowed three courses for £13.95, though the starter and desserts were limited in choice. Food was brought quickly, and fortunately, I could warm my hands over it! It was all very nice, though my cheesecake was the tiniest slice imaginable. I wondered if one got a smaller slice when using a voucher.
Staff were very bubbly. But there was no consistency. Seated by one, food ordered with another, brought by a third, cleared by a fourth, desserts order taken by a manager I think, brought by a sixth, then the bill given by that very first waitress. Awkward then, for a tip. as a team, they deserved it, so we did. But there was no delight or satisfaction in feeling we'd been looked after by any one or two individuals.
A warning. If you enter and it's fairly quiet, but you see long tables arranged for twelve, do expect a couple of parties of kids to be running rampant by the time you're cutting up your pizza. The staff dealt with them well, but maybe that's why our treatment was scattershot. And the toilets were soon overrun with giddy kids rushing in and out in twos and threes. This was a Saturday lunchtime.
No points taken off for the parties. Pizza Express have to take money. Nice food, swish place, happy staff. But froze my backside off, suspiciously small desserts (supposed to be a genuine saving) and would have preferred a more consistent waiter or waitress service.
