“Jane Austen 's Hampshire”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014

The ride to Basingstoke was very easy, and once there the tour was fantastic. Phil brings to life the settings of Jane's life (even when the building is no longer there) and writings. This was the best guided tour I had in the 10 days in and around London. He brings Jane to life in a place that has not changed dramatically.

Thank you for the review, and your point about the easy train journey out of London Waterloo!

“Best literary guide!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

Phil resurrects Jane Austen's Hampshire as he invites you to imagine the fields and places she visited as they might have looked during her time (and that being said, it really hasn't changed that much!). Phil is a wonderful person and guide -- truly an academic with a treasure trove of knowledge and insight into Austen's world. But he's also down to earth, and will meet you at your level of interest. I booked a half day excursion, since I had a car and had plans to view the Austen house & museum on my own later that day. All the places we visited earlier in the day and the substantial stories and details regarding Jane's life contributed significantly to my enjoyment of the house/ museum later in the day. I would highly recommend a tour with Phil!

Just a reminder that if you do have a car, the half day tour is all you need with me as the Jane Austen House is an easy twenty minute drive away.

“A highlight of our 15 days in England!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

Phil was one of the best guides we've ever had in all of our travels abroad. He was clearly the expert on as he puts it the "cradle of Jane Austin's genius". This is a tour for both Jane Austin fans and those interested in learning about the period and seeing the beautiful Hampshire countryside. Everyone in your family doesn't have a be a Jane fan to enjoy the trip. Phil provides wonderful stories of the life in Jane's time and ties together and weaves in her books and influences in her life. This review is from a Jane Austin fan, but clearly not someone who is an expert and Phil gave insights and information that makes me not only want to go back and reread all the books but also her letters to her sister that are also published. Also, if you've only seen the movies you'll enjoy going on this tour as you'll feel like you're right there in each one! Phil has clearly become the expert in the area, if you want a Jane Austin tour go to Hidden Britain Tours.

“A great day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2014

There's nothing better than being taken individually into the Hampshire countryside, exploring places that Jane lived, danced and socialised. Phil's knowledge of Jane Austen's (and neighbouring families') letters helped to make each place come alive for me. He was great company and generous with his time and knowledge. Having a delicious cheese souffle and beer lunch at the Fur and Feathers topped off a wonderful day.
