I have been reading and hearing about the Strawberry Duck for two or three years now but have been unable to visit as my pal, Roy, and I have been busy ploughing through lunches at other similar places in Lancashire. Today, however, I finally got there. My younger daughter and her partner suggested lunch and I persuaded them that this was where they wanted to go. (This was easy as they had been before and really like the place).
The menu is varied and interesting without being so long it is impossible to choose. Sadly I could not manage a starter as well as a main course as they looked exciting and different. A sweet was also out of the question for me as I had other work to do later on. I therefore opted to have the belly pork with apple, crackling, mustard mash and whole green beans. I hoped to repeat the wonderful belly pork experience I had had at the Keys just north of Lancaster on the A6. I was not disappointed. The rare breed pork belly was lean, tender, succulent and a dream to eat. The crackling was better than grandma's (and hers was prefect). The mustard mash, not something I have often chosen, was excellent and just enough for me. I also had a side order of seasonal vegetables consisting of steamed carrot sticks and roasted parsnips. They set the pork of perfectly!
My daughter had a starter plus a side order of chips and salad instead of a main course. Neil had the beer battered fish and chips with pureed split peas. He was very happy with his choice and I too thought it looked very good. My daughter's potted shrimps with toasted muffin looked delicious, as she said they were. It was a change to see a deviation from the traditional butter sealed potted shrimps found and enjoyed with brown bread and butter for tea in many hotels and restaurants in the north of the county. Her chips were crispy and chunky. I know that 'cos I pinched a few!
The restaurant (or is it a pub?) was warm and cosy, with several small, intimate rooms. It was reasonably busy seeing as it was a late lunch. The service was pleasant and efficient. At no time did the staff make us feel hurried, nor were they over intrusive. They were just right. The whole experience was pleasant and well worth the money. There are many more expensive places where you get a lot less for your money and of lesser quality.
I will be returning soon, hopefully with my wife. She expressed great interest when I told of my experience. But I will be going back anyway, even if she changes her mind!
