“Great Lunch Time Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

Basing this review on eating in the pub and not staying in the B&B I would give this 4-5 stars. The staff are very friendly and we have never had to wait too long for service. The food we have tried so far has been to a very good standard. A little bit more expensive than your average pub grub, but I also think the quality is too.
We have tried the jacket potatoes, speciality sandwiches and the spaghetti carbonara, all have been delicious. Unfortunately the Sunday lunch was not to this quality. We went at around 3 and the food did taste like it had been sat around for awhile.
I would recommend this pub for business lunches, shoppers and families also as it has a very wide selection of foods available.

Food is great and reasonably priced
Staff are friendly and attentive
Landlord is rude obnoxious and totally amazed how arkells still employ him!!!
Manager is just as clueless and just shrugs his shoulders when asked anything
Very noisy in evenings with youngs adults drinking as many shots as possible and terrible night sleep as pub stays open late
Usually fights in there at weekends
Avoid!!

Food and drinks were too expensive for a place in Swindon. It's not even in town. Nothing fancy actually. It's alright just for afternoon tea during the week cos of less people which was nice to chill n' chit chat. It was kinda busy n' noisy at night. Better go somewhere else....

I'm writing this review based on a visit to eat, not stay in the B & B. The pub is perfectly pleasant, with friendly staff (except the landlord) and plenty of space. It is also in a very good location. But I think the prices that they are charging are ridiculous. £7 for a jacket potato with topping, £6 for a cold sandwich, £7 for a Panini are some examples of this. These are the sort of prices that I would happily pay in a restaurant, but this is a pub without the sort of atmosphere, service and quality that you would get in a good restaurant. The food that I ordered was perfectly pleasant, but not restaurant quality. I think maybe they are getting ideas above their station, as this is after all an estate pub in North Swindon.

pleasantly surprised by the room and ensuite facillities. the restaurant is very child friendly with a great menu for my grand daughter (2) including icecream in a character casing. For us fabulous food at a great price - great selection we chose the 3 fish option and the red snapper was particulary delicious as were the two sauces. Breakfast was also excellent all fresh, great bacon eggs and lovely mushrooms and well cooked. something for everyone. Water wheel and play ground and in the back bar great sports screens. Close by -
Across the traffic light lovely lake walk with swans

Room Tip: we stayed in the tawny room large double bed and single - great ensuite

From start to finish the stay was hardly professional, the booking was taken half hearted with no conformation sent to us. Upon arriving at the Hotel we were ushered through a stairwell/ storage cupboard. Handed keys and shown the door to the room but that was as much information as we got.

The room was clean and tidy but not the best, the blinds fell off when we tried to close them, the glass shelf in the bathroom fell off the wall and the lamp shade looked like it had set on fire at some point in the past.

The food is poor although you do get alot for your money. We ordered two sandwiches at lunch and got enough food to feed us for the day. If it hadn't been over cooked then it might have done.

Breakfast was not great either and we felt like more of a hinderence than a guest. The chef kindly put some fruit together for us as there was none on display. Eventually breakfast, tea and coffee were served.

The tawny owl is clearly a nice pub for the regulars, providing decent beer, sports and games, a nice clean enviroment. The food is good for what you pay and the hotel is in a good location.

But if you are going for fine dining and a nice comfortable good quality room for the money then go somewhere else.

Room Tip: Go to a nice B&B nearby as you'll get a better room and better food for your money
