“Nice food, good staff, terrible 'duty manager'”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

I've been to the Goddard Arms a few times and I've never eaten there before. Yesterday, I decided to eat there with family. The food was excellent

After ordering our drink and food, we decided to sit near the bar. Not to close but close enough to watch the Swindon game on the TV next to the bar.

I would like to express that the bar staff and waitresses were excellent. They deserve praise.

The downside to our visit yesterday was the attitude of the duty manager. They had the Swindon game on both screens next to the bar but as soon as the (Swindon) game had started, he (the duty manager) decided to switch the game off. We asked nicely if he could put the game back on the TV we were sat next too but his response was "The Swindon game is not coming back on this TV, deal with it". You wouldn't speak to a dog in the manner he spoke to me and my family.

It wasn’t me or my family that had to deal with this person’s attitude. Another customer who went to the bar to order a drink had his head bitten off. Hell knows how many other customers had to deal with his appalling attitude.

We decided to leave as soon as we finished our meals due to the attitude of this manager. We didn’t want to spend more time listening to this manager biting off the heads of paying customers. We ended up going to another establishment within Old Town. His attitude spoilt, what would have been a great experience to “The Goddard Arm’s”

Again, I would like to express that the other bar staff and waitresses were excellent and they fully deserve praise.

Would like to thank the staff of the Goddard arms for a lovely one-night stay. Bed was comfortable and room was quiet despite looking on to the street. Was thrilled to be upgraded to a double room at no extra cost and enjoyed the extra space.

I am particularly indebted to them for providing me with breakfast even though I'd managed to sleep through it.

My only complaint is that the bathroom could have been in slightly better condition, but appreciate that this is a pub with rooms rather than a hotel per say, and for less than £50 per night including breakfast I can't complain too loudly!

This is a nice standard pub, good ale and food looked popular. Great service too. The rooms are small but have everything you need, clean and tidy too. WiFi is only available in the bar area, and the car park is a bit small if the hotel is full. A great location for the old town, and not too far from the main town centre and shops. From a business perspective if you are in the area for a night or two I'd recommend it, but if you are doing a long stay then there might be better options in the area. This is a nice pub/hotel - friendly and convenient. I'd stay again without a thought. Well done Goddard Staff...
The road outside the room was a bit noisey, and the rooms were very warm. No aircon.

Room Tip: Maybe try a room atthe back, it might be more quiet.

This was a most disappointing Christmas Day visit. It began in promising style, with a courteous and friendly welcome, followed throughout, it must be said, by excellent table service. The Wine Menu was quite acceptable, as were the Starter dishes served to my party. However, the traditional main course was of very poor quality, with only one relatively small slice of turkey - not professionally carved if its appearance was anything to go by - and an extremely unappetising bowl of vegetables although we were served additional sprouts - additional, that it, to be 2 initially allocated to each plate. The Christmas Pudding portions were miniscule and the cheese platter comprised a number of "chunks" served on a basic white plate. A complaint at the time was quite inappropriate, bearing in mind the Day and the attentive service we received from a member of staff attempting to deal with a busy Restaurant, but the proprietors have been advised of the general disappointment.

Went in here on xmas morning for a drink and was served promptly and politely, it was about 2.20, so some twenty minutes later returned to the bar for another and was told the bar had closed at 2.30, so I asked why did they have a sign in the window stating that the bar was open until 3pm, I argued this point and was eventually served after a conflab with the mangement and staff, this left a sour taste in my mouth as before that I was quite enjoying my visit there with a good warm and friendly athmosphere, so lesson to the outlet if you make statement regarding your tradin hours, stick to what you said or at least inform the clinetle of you intention to close early

My starter was forgotten and ended up as a dash to the local supermarket to buy a tin of soup ,arrived 10 minutes after everyone had eaten theirs. Beef bourguignon was cubed stewing beef with a dash of rich gravy,Anyone who give this place a high recommendation for food must live on Macdonalds..Only giving stars for quality of service by the staff.

Stayed at the Goddard arms a few times now while on business. It's very convenient for old town and walking distance to Nationwide and Intel offices. I pay about £60 for a double room and breakfast is about another £5. The rooms are a bit grubby with the peeling wallpaper but they don't smell. The beds are on the firm side.

The food is on the cheap and chearful side but plently of selection. Although the rooms are above the bar I've not been disturbed by any noise.

Overall - not bad for the money.
