Myself and my partner decided to try Thai Boran last night for a date night because it was a last minute thing and all the other restaurants we usually go to we're fully booked. However - we are very glad we went!
Having never been to Thai Boran before, we turned up and walked in not sure what to expect due to the location of the restaurant itself which is up a not very glamorous street in Derby. As there was nobody doing front of house or meet and greet, we weren't sure we were actually in a restaurant to behind with but we carried on up the stairs anyway and went to the bar where we explained we had a table booked. We actually thought about leaving at this point as the decor in the restaurant leaves a LOT to be desires, it's a little old fashioned to say the least and doesn't really look like a restaurant.
Having decided to stay, we were led to our table which was in the proper restaurant area round the back of the bar which put our minds at ease because there were a lot more tables there with a number of other customers which gave the place more ambience although the walls could do with a paint and the pictures updating but still - it just felt more authentic I suppose!!
Anyway - having sat down, we were given our menus and asked if we'd like a drink straight away which arrived pretty much as soon as we had ordered. There were crackers on the table on our arrival too which was a lovely touch. We ordered the sharing platter to start and once again, it arrived almost instantly which we loved as we were so hungry.
The food was AMAZING!!! Absolutely gorgeous. We ordered our mains which also arrived very soon after the starter was over and cleared away. Once more, absolutely amazing main courses. The sticky rice was beautiful.
I was sad when the meal was over as it tasted sooooo good! Also the service was just fantastic, the waiter never let our glasses be empty and brought the food and drinks quickly and didn't forget anything or make any mistakes with our choices. They also knew when to leave you alone (I don't like it when the waiters want a conversation in restaurants) which was nice too.
All in all, a beautiful meal served with excellent service. The only thing that lets this place down is the first impression when you walk through the door. Now that we know what this place is really like, we will DEFINITELY be going back. And I advise that if you're thinking about it, give it a go, you won't be let down.
