The restaurant was busy on a Thursday lunch with a mixture of business people and groups of retired locals who clearly return to this gem of a restaurant. No doubt the value-for-money lunch menus help attract the mixed clientele. A 2-course lunch which includes cannon of beef on the menu at £23.95 has to be worth considering.
The menu reads very well and caters for all tastes, although a nearby guest mentioned that she was a vegetarian so a separate menu was offered. The choice of breads was not extensive but it was fresh, spongey and tasty. My mackerel starter was well presented though crispier skin would have made it an excellent choice. The main course of cannon of beef (asked for - and cooked - "rare") was well executed and a generous portion size. My choice of Torres rose wine (by the glass) worked well for both the mackerel and the beef.
One of the striking points about this restaurant is the service. Waiting staff are well presented and have clearly been well-trained. Each course was delivered to the correct guest without the usual "who's having ....the mushrooms?" That is the mark of a good restaurant and I would certainly put Darleys in the category "worth a detour"
