“The jewel in Allestree's crown”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013 via mobile

We are regulars at the raj and visit once a month. Whilst we try other restaurants its like coming home to the raj. Love the new leadership with some of the old team in there. Freddy knows my husband is adventurous and always has different things for him to try. Lashes is there too when freddy isn't around he sorts out our needs. Looks big and scary but he's a pussycat.
I can't name any particular dish as my favourite as there are several and it would change with each visit.
Keep feeding Allestree with your beautiful cuisine.

Hi,

Thank you for taking some time to leave a review for the Raj Restaurant, it is very appreciated.

Over the past 12 months we have increasingly focused on becoming more customer centric, with the arrival of our highly talented head chef, formally co owner and head chef at the Okra in Duffield we have certainly taken the Raj up a few notches and were still not done.

Pop quiz, did you know Lashes stared in a Bollywood Movie!?!?

Look forward to seeing you soon.

Thanks,

Maddy Ahmed

“The Raj, Allestree, Derby”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

Really nice, well-cooked food last night, made with fresh ingredients. The only slight criticism was that the poppadams were just a bit soggy and the pickle tray could have been tastier. But this was made up for by a really nice onion bhaji, followed by a freshly-cooked vegetable biryani with sauce. My husband was also pleased with his choice. Very tasty! And I am quite a good cook and VERY fussy indeed. I agree that the negative review does not sound like The Raj at all, and we have been going there several times a year for about 10 years now.

Hi Anne,

Thank you for visiting the Raj Restaurant and for taking some time out to leave a review.

My personal apologies for the poppadoms, we make them fresh and it appears that never dried out in time, on closer inspect it appears the heating element in had a intermittent problem, which now has been resolved.

Very happy you enjoyed the rest of your food!

Look forward to seeing you again.

Kind Regards,

Maddy

“Glad to have our local back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013 via mobile

We hadn't visited the Raj since last November as the food was getting worse by the week.
Recent months we suspected it must be under new ownership as they finally have started to care for the apperance of the outside (something that had never been done). We were right! The food, the service and the surroundings were great - glad to return, just hope they keep up the consistency.

“Our nice new local”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Having recently moved nearby we were on the hunt for a new curry house. We'd heard that the nearest wasn't great but we thought we'd give it a try, not expecting much.
We were surprised at just how good it was. The curry was delicious- the best I've had in a while (and my husband and I go out for a lot of curries!)
I had the Murg Handi Lazeez which was delicious but my Mum had the garlic chicken clay pot which was out of this world (and excellent value as it included a Naan, a salad and a side pot of sauce)- warning: neither of these dishes were particularly hot if you're into mouth burning curries.
The service was good and the price was reasonable- higher than some places but no extortianate.
After the meal we were given a £10 off voucher for our next meal there which I'm sure will be very soon.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for leaving a review, it is really appreciated! Extremely happy enjoyed yourself at the Raj, we have left no stone unturned and have a very talented culinary team, which is lead by the highly renowned head chef from the Okra in Duffield.

We don't tend to make mouth burning curries unless explicitly asked for,as the majority of customers quite like their taste buds :). When your in next time let us know how hot you like it and we will give you some heat.

We are very competitively priced compared to similar fine dining restaurants and have a number of offers for both a la carte and take away diners.

Kind Regards,

Ali
