“Don't bother, horrendous service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013 via mobile

I got treated to the afternoon tea as a birthday present. On arrival we got informed to find 'Shona?' To seat us.... Very helpful, not. We had called ahead and booked a table for 12pm and asked for a high chair. As they were still mopping the floor at 12;10 we had to wait in the bar. Not helpful, trying to explain this to a 5month old.....

The afternoon tea, if stale bread, dry cakes and nothing to drink is your thing, this is the place for you. There was no one around to ask for a drink (we got served one on arrival) the cakes left your mouth as dry as it would be in a dessert, the chances of finding water in a dessert would be easier than finding staff.

If you are disabled or male don't take young children as the only changing facilities are in the female toilets.

All I can say is no wonder we are the only people here. I know my sister paid £47 through last minute for this experience, not even a glass of prosseco offered! Awful!

Stayed one night on an experience more voucher, paid for an upgrade for a suite,(£75 extra) as it was my birthday, the room was quite big on a corner overlooking the train station, which was incredibly noisy all night, taxis pulling up constantly and seemed like the drivers having conversations all night too.The room was the oddist room I have ever stayed in, there is a completely separate living room, which lacked so much warmth and character, it reminded us of a doctors waiting room,it didn't feel like part of the room at all. The Shower was awful, just trickelled at best, and very mouldy around seals.
The breakfast was good, lots of fresh fruit, good choice overall, we waited ages to be offered a hot drink though, and when it came the tea is poured straight from a teapot,so was unbelievably stewed, hope that idea does not catch on.
The communal parts of this hotel are lovely, the bedroom we stayed in was not, to say it was an upgrade, so I wouldn't like to see the standard or exec rooms. The hotel is in a very good location for the town, but you have to bear that in mind if you like quiet.
All staff were very friendly especially girl on check-in,made to feel very welcome.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the station, dont pay extra for a suite, not worth it.

Just stayed at the Hallmark Derby with a group of people with Parkinson's for four nights, great room for wheelchair access, also great service from all the staff especially the customer service manager.
Food and service excellent in the dinning area, nothing to much trouble, would recommend this hotel to anyone but especially someone wanting to take an elderly relative on a break.

I've stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions for work and its a perfectly good standard hotel. The staff are very pleasant and efficient, and cleanliness is always good. The breakfast is also excellent, buffet style and well cooked, though on a busy morning there's the possibility your hot drinks order will be forgotten. The rooms themselves vary depending on whether you are in the original Victorian building (a few creaky floorboards) or the modern extension, but the standard is good and beds all large and comfortable. On the down side there have been issues with the drains on a couple of stays (leave the plug in the sink and bath....!) and the rooms can be very stuffy in hot weather - no air con. A good tip off is the fan is located in the cupboard under the television in most standard rooms.

Great little spot and brilliant location at a excellent price. Stayed here for one night food beautiful . The only thing i found fault with was the price of a glass of wine it was quite expensive. Very clean and staff polite without being intrusive

We, like many others had a Chatsworth House package. Ours was direct with the hotel for 2 nights at a weekend, including breakfast both mornings, one 2 course dinner from the al la carte menu and tickets for both of us to Chatsworth. Total at £178 was reasonable, as once our 2 course dinner (ex drinks) and our Chatsworth tickets were taken into account the two night stay was actually £103.

We got off to a good start on a very wet Friday night bagging the last spot in the hotel's small car park. The receptionist checked us in smoothly and booked our inclusive dinner for the following evening. Unfortunately we could only have 630 or 830 as other times were booked.

The first thing we noticed in the room was the heat. It was a cool evening, no more the 10C, yet the room w as stifling. We remembered a previous reviewer commenting that there was a fan, which we found, and had it on the whole time we were in the hotel.

Our room was, apparently, an executive room. It was a reasonable size but the bed was at best a queen, ideal for what I guess is the hotel's main clientele, business people staying alone. Good points were big towel (made a nice change) and good toiletries, but in an executive room it should be normal to include a robe.

Breakfast, being weekend was between 8 and 10. We arrived at 915 to find a queue to give our room number to join the breakfast queue. It did move fairly quickly but was really haphazard, and we were sat down a little after 930. The buffet breakfast was fine. Usual fare, reasonably well cooked. Avoided the dozen or so eggs on the hot plate as have had bad experiences in the past. When food ran out it was replenished smartly and tea and coffee was always being offered.

Dinner was also interesting. We arrived at our appointed time of 830, and were given menus promptly. We asked for water to drink whilst we studied the wine list. We ordered food fairly quickly and a bottle of wine soon after. The wine took over 20 minutes to arrive, and the first course food (our two courses were main and dessert) another 20 minutes. The other diners near t o us were served no quicker. We had spoken to two couples in the hotel both of whom had said the food was really good. Perhaps our standards are higher or we were unlucky but both pork fillet and lamb shoulder dishes were unexciting, as was the apple pie desert. The best thing to our mind was that none of the dishes were smothered in sauce, this being served in jugs on the side. All the young staff were pleasant, less so the gentleman who we assumed was the head waiter.

Breakfast next morning was a little less haphazard, but we ended up taking ours in the bar area rather than the restaurant.

Check out was quick, but no "hope you enjoyed your stay" or "hope to see you again". The answer to both is no.

Many hotels, we now know, do Chatsworth packages. Well worth sounding others out rather than stay some 50 minutes away.

I booked, with GoGroupie, a one night stay with breakfast, evening meal plus a visit to Chatsworth House for my husband and I. We were made welcome as soon as we arrived. Lovely room - very clean with a superb bathroom. Meal was good and plenty of choice for breakfast. Nice and close to town with good range of shops, pubs and restaurants. Pleased with whole package and would certainly have no hesitation in recommending.

Room Tip: Upgrade to executive if you can.
