“Think 'someone's house'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

I go here regularly because it is fairly quiet, the beer is good ( IMHO) and there are lots of little rooms with comfortable seats in. Ideal for a semi-private occasion with friends! It is the restored house of Robert Raikes (founder of the Sunday School movement) and still retains a house like feel. The toilets (on the 3rd floor!) are the best I've ever seen in a pub (well the gents are - I'm told the ladies are equally smart).
There is a large outside courtyard for the smokers or for the sun (if there is any). It's a basic paved but OK in summer.
No idea about the food: as far as I'm concerned it is a rather smart pub.

“Extensive Menu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

I found the menu really appealing, the food was nice enough but the wine was expensive. Really nice atmosphere, service average. Passed the glass of water WITHOUT ice test.

“Waste of time.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

Went in for a drink as a friend said the courtyard was nice (which wasn't really) they only sell the specific specific lager from the brewery, which isn't very nice and we tried 3 of them. We didn't know this before entering and when we questioned were is the standard pub lager you would normally find is, the horrible, dirty, agressive, thinks he knows it all, rude little barman (who i beleive to be the landlord) got irrate at such "a stupid question" awful customer service.

Looked at the menu - boring.
Went to the courtyward - boring.
Drank our expensive pints - boring.
Then left.

The building is nice, but think this gets smothered with the rest of the drivel. Wouldn't recommed or go back.

“Raikes Pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

Absolutely beautiful building - well restored. Not a huge selection of spirits, but very good real ale. There are several individual rooms to sit in which are so cosy and private, and also a nice courtyard outside.

“Great setting.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

Wonderful setting and building with so much potential?
Never been busy when I have been there which is a shame. Had the Sunday roast which was pretty good.
No ambience unfortunately and not helped by the staff which is so critical to opinion and likelihood to return!
