“Night and day between dining and stay...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2012 via mobile

For a romantic evening stay the Wharf House fits the bill. Our ensuite room had a beautiful bed...I mean view of the Severn. And the whirlpool bath and open shower divine! It was however a little off putting the first time my husband had to run down to the car and I was left sitting in the dark. But the "green" energy was a reason for choosing this restaurant with rooms. Yes. The restaurant. Hmmm. It was good, but I needed to add salt. This is a rosette establishment, the chef should know to salt the potato water.( I think the unsalted supper potatoes were used for breakfast the next morning.) And there were silk flowers on the tables. There was a beautiful blooming English garden. We were left a little confused to what the decor was trying to capture. All in all, a nice stay, but go downtown for supper and drinks.

Valentines dinner, very expensive for what you got! £50 per head. No ambience at all, harsh lighting, no candles, fake rose in vase and not the romantic atmosphere you would expect. Very good food - don't think the champagne sorbet was correctly advertised as tasted more like rose, but all in all food was worth it. Only full fat milk for your coffee and had to request a clean spoon. Service was too quick - in and out in 1hr 45 mins and that is with 6 courses.

We’ve stayed here several times, always with a warm welcome, unfussy attention to our wishes and plenty of smiles. The rooms are well furnished with wonderfully firm beds and the oval jacuzzi baths add a nice touch, with soft fluffy bathrobes and towels to relax in. Dinner and breakfast are the perfect complement. The environment is delightful, with the ever changing Severn to one side and on the other the restored canal heading towards Hereford – a long term project which all the Wharf House profits go to support. This gives the place a great sense of purpose, and if it’s raining there’s plenty to look at in the visitor centre.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet but for complete peace ask for a room overlooking the canal basin

We have stayed several times at the Wharf House. Built by the Over basin, where the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal will meet the Severn once the canal is fully restored, all profits from the establishment go towards the Canal Trust. The Canal Trust’s task to restore the 34 miles of canal to Hereford is a daunting one, given that some of the original route has been built on and detours must be found and the land acquired.

Set high above the bank of the River Severn, the Wharf House is peaceful and cosy, with warm hospitality and staff who are attentive to detail: no canned music here. Dinner is an interesting experience with a wide variety of unusual combinations of flavours. The young staff are efficient and pleasant and the décor unfussy but elegant. The wine list is good.

And its Wisteria-clad terrace is a magnificent place from which to view the Severn Bore.

Room Tip: They are all good rooms.

We booked for a weekend in mid-October 2011

Lovely location in a quiet area although just off the side of a main road
The car park is quite dark, dimly it by a few blue bulbs
The car park is big and close to the hotel reception
Reception was quiet as the hotel is small.
We were asked to fill out a breakfast request for the next day - choice of continental or english cooked breakfast or scrambled eg and salmon, as well as cereals, fruit and unlimited juices. The second night they left the form in our room to complete. You also need to choose a time for serving. Latest at the weekend is 9.30!!!
The breakfast was delicious, really yummy and exactly as ordered on the form....and without any wait!
Local produce for sale in the reception area such as wine and apple juice as well as the products they use in the rooms eg hand soap
Quickly shown to our room which was on the third floor. There are 6 rooms in total
The hall carpet was dirty and needed replacing or a thorough clean!
Key fob entry to the hotel area as the building is also open to non-guests during the day, so it felt safe and secure
OUr room was beautiful, modern but cosy too. Flat screen tv, wardrobes built into the eves of the property, sofa, huge comfy double bed with fluffy pillows, tea and coffee making facilities with fresh milk in the fridge, mini-bar in the fridge,
The bathroom was clean and fresh although extra towels would've been good. We had the jacuzzi room which was fun.
complimentary shampoo, shower gel, handwash and hand cream as well as toothbrush etc

and a final touch of a hand baked biscuit on the bed....it wasnt to my tasting as it was lavender but it was a lovely touch

We stayed two nights. The room was cleaned nicely for our second night. Check out on the last day is 10am which I think is toooooo early!!!

We ate the restaurant one night, its necessary to book. The food was delicious, although i dont drink wine there was a huge range of wines, as well as locally produced apple juices. Delicious dinner - i had pork stuffed with apricots on a yummy mash

Defiantely recommend staying here. We spent the days in cheltenham at the races, but its very near Gloucester too

Thank you very much for the kind review. We pride ourselves on the building being kept fresh and spotlessly clean - unfortunately the hall carpet had suffered some serious abuse that was beyond us fixing and we have a specialist in tomorrow taking the whole day to bring it back to the standard we would both expect. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay and looking forward to seeing you again.

We stayed at the Wharf House on the weekend of 1 October. Arrived at 3.30pm to be greeted by a young girl, who didn't even bother to say hello how was your journey, it was just can you complete these forms for breakfast in the morning? How can anyone know what they want for breakfast the following day? We asked if we could confirm later she said Ok, very reluctantly, and we were shown our rooms, which I must say were very nice.

We completed our choice of breakfast for the following date, and of course they needed to know the time we required to eat, and handed the forms in. We sat on the terrace to have a drink, but thought I would just ask if it would be Ok if we ordered in the morning rather than now, so I went inside and asked a guy, he said yes we could order in the morning, but it would take a little longer as everything was cooked fresh to order. At this the girl who booked us in said no they can't they have to order now, and then walked away, very rudly!!!
We had booked to eat there on the evening, but because of the attitude of the staff, we cancelled, glad we did as there is no ambiance at all in the restuarant.

We went down for breakfast at 9.30 prompt the following day, to find that even though they knew 24 hours in advance we were coming down at 9.30am our table was not laid for breakfast!!! We had to ask for tea spoons, sugar, milk, salt and pepper, and even to have the table cleared of used cerial bowls etc, which were just building up at the end of our table.

I can honestly say, that this place could be beautiful as the setting is really nice, but the staff are far to young and inexerienced to run the place, they have absolultely no idea, and it's obvious not much training in customer service. We could even hear all of the noises from the kitchen, including the girl who checked us in swearing very loudly, not very pleasant.

So the sum up our stay, lovely place and setting, very nice bedrooms, breakfast good, but the staff - forget it. Don't waste your money staying here, everything expensive and not worth it.

Stayed there with some friends. Infact we booked out 5 of the 6 rooms as we were all off to a Morgan Sports car anniversary meeting at nearby Prescott hillclimb venue. Bathrooms were in mint condition and we could not fault the standard of the rooms. Being owners of The PitStop b&b with the TripAdvisor five circle rating, I guess we are qualified to give a proper and honest review. An excellent dinner was served in the restaurant on time with very attentive staff. The pre booked breakfast was of a high standard and freshly cooked, even though it did arrive in batches, some minutes apart. We were 10 at the table so understandable. Bacon and sausages were particulry tasty. Would we go back there if attending another car race meeting - you bet !
