Description: An AA Red Rosette restaurant serving quality freshley prepared produce. We would strongly request and advise advance Reservations. signature dishes such as Venison rolled in Walnut with a sauce of red currants with a hint of Dark Chocolate. Please note that we do not have a childrens menu but welcome young diners who will not disturb our other guests and wish to experience the normal a la carte menu. Our menus are designed as three courses, with side dishes available for those who wish, but the option to choose less courses if you wish less. “OK, but does seem a little overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

Have eaten here before and had not been overly impressed on that occasion. More recently we had heard some good comments and so decided to make a return visit. Basically the food was pleasant, but did seem overpriced. The atmosphere for a Saturday night was relaxed and quiet, with just under half the seats being occupied. The restaurant was clean but a little lacking in character. Specials were offered at the time of ordering, but there was no price given either verbally, on a blackboard, or on the menu. A reasonable selection of wine, with what seems a moderate mark up.

“A nice surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

We had read no reviews and were expecting the usual cheap and cheerful cafe associated with heritage railways and canal restorations. Instead we got a very classy light lunch: a bit slow in coming but we were in no hurry. The setting is great, not only for anoraks, and one would have high hopes of the accommodation. Can't wait to go back.

“Plain and expensive but still rather nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

We signed up to the Groupon offer of a 6 course taster menu for two for £49. Arriving in the dark we found the car park poorly lit and full of pot holes. From the outside the Wharf is plain to say the least but the interior is well lit, clean and tidy but also rather lacking in character.

It was a quiet night to say the least with only four other tables occupied while we were there. The service was excellent, the timing between courses was about right and our main waitress was charming if probably a little inexperienced. We thought the food was excellent. The scallops were cooked just right and the steak was succulent and, oddly enough, cooked just right even though we were never asked how we would like it done.

I have to say that the regular price for the taster menu at around £50 per head seems rather high to me. The food was certainly tasty and well presented and if the surroundings were more luxurious then maybe you could get away with it.

My wife agrees with an earlier reviewer that the hand cream in the ladies was lovely. So much so we ended up buying a bottle for the small shop.

All-in-all I would go again but check the prices first.

“Disappointing....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013 via mobile

We went expecting good things, for the price we paid! food looked good, but tasted bland with one overpowering element. Service rushed, not personal, windows dirty, details not looked at. Wine was good and hand cream in the ladies was lovely. There is plenty better out there especially for the money.

“Truly 4Stars”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

This excellent gem should not be overlooked.
I've also use the 'hotel' on many visits this year (reviewed in that section of the site), the location is FAB, but the food outshines it ... truly beautiful food, lovingly prepared and always served with style.
