“Enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

We were greeted on arrival by Steve, who was so helpful and friendly. He carried our cases up the rooms for us too. Afternoon tea was included in our rate and tho' it was after 5.30 it was honoured and brought to us without complaint. And a very nice afternoon tea it was. Very fresh, well presented and tasty. It's a bit jaded in places but the warmth of welcome, friendly staff and overall ambience of this hotel makes it a very pleasant place to be. The hotel is currently being refurbished and will re-open it's restaurant too. It promises to be quite special and I look forwards to returning!

Room Tip: There is no lift so ask for a room on either the ground or 1st floor.

I only stayed one night at The Balmoral which is in quite a good location near the exhibition centre. The member of staff I dealt with was very welcoming and helpful and the bar/entrance area was nice. Apparently the hotel had recently been bought and was in the process of being upgraded. My room was attractive on first arrival but also very small. The wallpaper was peeling slightly and some of the furniture looked like it needed some TLC. The wardrobe was small and a bit musty so I left the door open all night!

Points to note. The room was fine, the bed was comfortable and the TV had all the digital channels (so many seem not to) and was in a good spot. However, I thought the price I paid for the room was a bit too high (maybe I was paying for the location but The Majestic was cheaper)! I stay in quite a few hotels and am not massively picky but here are the reasons why:
1) The room had no bath (would have been expected at the price I paid). The shower was fine but the sealant at the base was really poorly applied (small thing I know).
2) It was very small (but then a lot are and it is an old building)
3) There's no room service (I had to go for a little walk to find a Sainsburys) - but I understand the new owners are rectifying this shortly
4) It's an old building. The walls are paper thin so you can hear everything next door and the ceilings creak and groan with every step and turn of a tap in the room above. This did affect my sleep considerably and is the most significant point to note of them all - but again, I understand it is an old building!

However, I did get the impression from the staff member that they are trying and maybe am judging the hotel too early on in the new ownership but can only comment on my experience! Breakfast again, was standard fare.

We stayed here from Friday night till Monday morning. The welcome was excellent and was the start of a very enjoyable break. Part of the package included a welcoming afternoon tea which was of a very good standard. Considering that the hotel does not have full catering facilities just now, everything was of a very high standard. Breakfast dishes were all very well presented and most enjoyable. Our room was at the top of the hotel and has been excellently furnished with a very modern and comfortable bathroom. Some previous critics have been very picky and have criticized minor details. Certainly a nice set of hangers in the wardrobes would be good but that would be to carp unnecessarily! We will return and certainly look forward to the dining facilities promised before Christmas. All staff certainly deserve this to succeed.

Just got back from the Balmoral having treated a friend for his birthday. Great hotel, really helpful, pleasant staff, nothing was too much trouble.
On arrival we were greeted well and given a lovely room with four poster bed and good sized bathroom. As were the couple we treated. They were really impressed!!
We also had afternoon tea which i thought was a lovely touch. Unfortunatly the restaurant was being refurbished which we didnt know about before arrival as our intentions were to our evening meal there. We found a nice place near by, the hotel is situated about a five minute walk into the centre of harrogate.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of visiting Harrogate, the only thing lacking, was that there was no lift to the upper floors which could cause a problem for some people.
We booked with Secret Escapes, so did get a really good price for our stay but at no time were we treated any different than anybody else.

From the moment we walked in we was amazed at the hotel and staff. Steve the duty manager was brilliant and you could tell he genuinely cared about us as the customer and he truly enjoyed his job. We stayed in the windsor suite which was fantastic. The rooms were massive and extremely clean. My wife was amazed. There was a few small items that looked a little worn but this did not subtract from tge experience. From the large settees to the big comfy bed everything was great. The bar was quiet at night but it allowed us a more intimate retreat. A big thankyou to steve and his team for going the extra mile to make our stay a memorable one

i was appalled at my stay here, it was nice and i was even going to look past the tatty decor in the bedroom but once i was 5 mins before brekfast due to a very important phonecall i had to make i was disgusted with the way a woman (presumably the owner) treated me i left with no brekfast and feel i deserve a refund this was however not the case!!

Stayed here for one night mid-week, had a really pleasant stay in a spacious room with 4 poster bed with comfortably sized
en suite bathroom.
Room was nicely furnished and bed was very comfortable.
Both the afternoon tea and breakfast were excellent.
Staff were very friendly and helpful; recommending a great restaurant for our evening meal.
Will definitely stay here again.
